Discovery 3 (LR3) and Discovery 4 (LR4) Registry

What rack manufacturer is that on the white LR4? I'm still not totally sold on any of them yet looks wise, except maybe the flat one from Urban Offroad but the one on the white one doesn't look too bad. How is it for wind noise and mpg loss?

That is my LR4 and it's from Derek at Urban Offroad. Since I have the black-design package, he offers racks that fit the full-length roof rails (or half-rails if needed). I had a great experience working with Derek, his racks are extremely well built and sturdy. His shop is out of Oakhurst, CA, so he offers free installation. I had a 2011 LR4 with a Voyager rack, which was nice because it bolts directly to the truck - no need for roof rails - but it certainly was not as durable and strong as the rack from Urban Offroad.

There is definitely some wind noise, but you get that with any rack. It doesn't help that I have large Pelican boxes up there and my Hi Lift jack, though even without them and the rack alone, there is still wind noise. It is not a whistling noise like on some racks, just wind. Derek does offer two types of wind fairings that he can integrate onto the rack, and supposedly that cuts down the wind noise drastically. I opted out of the wind fairing because I plan to install a light bar. As for loss of MPGs, yes, it went down slightly, but not too bad. At this point I can't really complain with my rack, AT tires, skid plates, sliders, etc.

The other option you may have is the Baja rack, which fits on the half rails. I really like the design and it has the built-in wind fairing, but I have heard it also has some wind noise. A few LR3 guys I know on here have it and I really like the look.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Here are a few photos before I put the chicken coop flooring and all the crap on the roof:

I have experience with both the voyager rack and the Baja I have a coworker that has a voyager rack on his LR three and it does bolt the top and it seemed very sturdy and very rigid to me the Baja rack that I had on my LJ Rubicon was much more flimsy I was not that impressed with its rigidity.

I am very interested in the low-profile urban off-road rack for my LR3

Maybe we should start a new thread...

I really liked my Voyager rack and considered going that route with my 2013 LR4, but I sort of wanted to keep the rails. In the end, I am very happy I went with the Urban Offroad; Derek runs a great operation and his fabrication skills are awesome. I sort of push the rack to the max and the Urban Offroad rack has been rock solid. My experience with the Voyager was good, but having seen comparable loads and use, the Urban Offroad rack was a bit better with stronger build and design. Since you have an LR3, then you must have the short rails, so the Urban Offroad rack would be a good choice for you. I've seen his low-profile design and it's quite nice!

As for the Baja Rack, I really like the look of it and how it is more of a basket, but I agree with you..... it is not as sturdy and rigid as the Voyager and Urban Offroad.

If you go with Urban Offroad, tell Derek that I recommended him - David West from CA with the white LR4 - he installed my rack, sliders, and ladder for me at his shop in Oakhurst. If you are in CA, it's worth the drive so he doesn't have to freight ship it.

I like his sliders, but I am actually switching to Tactical 4x4 for the extra protection. He also carries the OEM ladder, which I think is the best fit and look. I had the Voyager ladder on my 2011 and it's solid, but I had some fitting trouble.

LR3 added to stable

Like many fellow owners, one rover is just not enough...

We are in the process of purchasing a 2006 LR3 Tonga Green with 83k miles. For those of you who know, it is Sasquatch Offroad's truck. He was the pioneer in developing the rods that extend the height of the EAS suspension. It already comes equipped with an ARB front bumper with 9k lb Superwinch, roof rack and a few extras. We pick it up Sunday and will post pics. :wings:

Congratulations!!! I love Dave's rig (saw it a couple times on the trails) and thought about purchasing it myself, but just not the right time. I am putting too much money into my 2013 LR4 these days! :)

Enjoy and please post photos - I'd love to see it again in person.

And, I've got the towing bits on it for this...

Can you say overloaded much!?

Your not seriously pulling that boat on a regular basis with the LR are you!?

I don't know what your state laws are but it is moronic to pull something that weighs that much out side of your tow rating

I can tow 7700 pounds, ~700 tongue

Boat dry is 4,500 lbs
Full tank, 57 gal * 8.4 gal/pound = 479 lbs
Trailer is a Shorelander 5500lbs (SLB55TBBL), weighs 1280 lbs

So im at ~6300 with a full tank and trailer. Then add in maybe 200 lbs max of junk, to make for 6500lbs.

I've got 1200 lbs to spare.

A Land Rover is a fantastic tow vehicle. It doesnt struggle to go or stop. The trailer has dual axle disc brakes which helps a lot.

Edit: I noticed your H3T has a 5,000 lbs dead weight or 5,900 on a weight distribution hitch tow limit for the V8. Now I understand why you were concerned. :p
(note, was kinda hard to find specs for H3T alpha V8, but i think that is right. http://www.thecarconnection.com/specifications/hummer_h3t_2010_4wd-4dr-alpha_other-specs)

That's not over-loaded. THIS is overloaded!

Or maybe THIS:

Though to be fair neither was towed more than a block. I did have one heck of a time getting that 33' Regal up the ramp with the black 1/2 ton Dodge though. 2wd only. It took several attempts. Once I had it up and in the office parking lot, I turned it over to a delivery service who towed it to it's new home with a 1-ton dually (also a Dodge).

The 36' Carver was put on the trailer with a travel lift and towed with a Freightliner to a local boat show, then moved into place with the highly mod'ed older 1-ton Dodge in the picture. The trucker used his pickup because it was more maneuverable inside the big tent than the big-rig. He did use however buy a small White forwarder single-axle rig just for moving the bigger boats into that show the next year.

Not that I'd have wanted to try it, but I bet my LR3 would have had an easier time getting that Regal up the ramp than my pickup. Of course, at an estimated 10,000lbs with the steel triple axle trailer I don't think I'd want to subject the Rover that sort of load! (the Dodge...well, it's just a truck, right?)

What was the beam on those? Mine is 8'6", which is as wide as you can be without a permit right?

If I had a bigger boat I would most likely not trailer it or would have someone else do all of that. I like to take mine to different lakes and on the very near by upper Mississippi river, so trailering is nice. I can also work on the boat at my house which is nice. Overall cheaper than having a larger boat, paying slip fees and maintenance. I'm sure I will do that someday, maybe if im living near an ocean somewhere warmer.

I guess if we continue this conversation we should have a Land Rover Towing thread.
