Doc's 05 Tacoma Build Thread

Whoa! What a timely question... I just had the 255's put on yesturday. When I dropped the truck off at the tire shop, I wondered how the new spare would fit underneath. They said it wouldn't be a problem. I forgot to take a look until I read this post... Yeah, its a tight fit. The tire actually barely touches the exhaust shield in one spot. Something to keep an eye on!

Did you shorten the rear most 2 legs to allow the tire to push up close the the rear pan? Mine had to be done, as it would not seat all the way up against the carrier.

Yea - that contact with the heat shield would make me nervous. Not really sure how hot it gets though, and whether it could/would melt the rubber.

Erin - What sort of rear bumper/tow package do you have? I'll need to look underneath mine again, but I seem to recall 2 legs on the diff side, but not sure what it rests against on the bumper side. But I have the OEM tow package, which seems to be a limiter as well in where the tire seats.

I have an All Pro bumper, no tow package. My tire bracket is pretty much a star pattern, and I cut about 3" of the 2 rearmost legs, which allowed the fullsize spare to fit up and back, towards the bumper. It is a tight squeeze everywhere, but fits real well now.

Here's my 2 cents.....

If i were you.....Ether make a thicker shield and pull the tire back a little or find another place to mount the tire......After a long day on the trail.....you could find yourself smelling rubber.....

I have alot of miles on her with the 255 spare stuffed in there, I have never smelled rubber. No problems so far.

I will be doing a rear bumper similar to Flyingwil's when I get back to the States, but will not be doing the high speed swing out tire carrier. It will be high clearance with wraparounds and I will maintain the spare in the stock location since I'm keeping an eye on my COG since I added the rack.

I have also decided to add a GOLIGHT model 2049 to finish off my lighting system, I acquired one in a recent supply warehouse raid... :shakin:

I really will need an to upgrade to an Odyssey now...

Interesting, maybe your spare is seated in a better position than mine. I don't have too many miles on the tires yet... but I routinely smell rubber! I have been thinking about a simple way to insert a spacer to push the exhaust hanger over a bit.

Interesting.... The golights seem like a good solution.

Golight

The Golight will be very useful as a camp finder, recovery, repair, and trouble spotting light. I have been looking for a light to do all of these and this seems like the Swiss Army solution to expedition lighting IMO.

Cant wait to go home. Ill be home in April making this a 15 month paid vacation. Oh well just means more $$$$ for the Taco:wings: . Stay safe and good luck

Thanks ArmyTaco!

I'm out here on the western edge of the empire at Al Qa'im. My guys are spread from Hussaybah on the Syrian border almost as far east as Rawah along the Euphrates. Good times.

With any luck we'll be home for Christmas!
