Found a Land Rover or 2

Been searching around for a project to conquer and go on to explore with my son. I don't know how I stumbled across the Expedition Portal, but i have to tell you this is one heck of a site for info articles and those great expedition stories that are posted up. I really have been on the trailer section for sometime because i have some strange affection for trailers. I have 2 trailers for hauling just about anything- one is from the 60's that my dad gave to me a few years ago the other i traded a neighbor a 86 mustang project car that he wanted for his daughter to work on with him, the last one is a 50's used to haul around a boat back in the day, it was made by Mastercraft, don't think its related to the boat manufacture from current times, i use it now for hauling my kayak.

After looking at all the cool expo vehicles and stories it hit me, I want to build something and go on an adventure!

love the fj40 the 45 the pigs the 80 series Toyota pretty much all of the toyotas are cool, but wanting something a little more different, my all time favs are the Jeep FC150 / 170 that has been on my list for many many years. but still looking for something out of the norm ( even though the FC150 is not really the norm ) the series Land Rover has bitten me !! I have been looking for a few months and it was just funny that i came across 2 of them in a matter of days.

A series 3 running ( someone else had taken on this project ) it seems ok in the pics but there is some body damage, I have not seen this one in person.

The second one a series IIA was spotted a few days after i had seen the posting sitting on someones property. I finally got a chance to stop by the persons home last saturday as asked to take a look at it

Yeah It needs a lot of work !!!
about the only thing nice is it has straight body panels, front bulkhead is/seems completely shot no floorpans. You can see the drivers door is hanging, passenger side is about to go as well. Only one door window top is in the front seats and the doors are pretty rotted out on the bottom.

Back door is not that bad from just looking at it one of the back windows looks like it was shot out

there are 4 separate jump seats in the back

frame looks well lets just say it could be patched!!! hahah yeah

there is one odd thing that comes out of a hole in the bumper it looks like a break line then it terminates to a rubber hose and then i looks like it is resting on a bracket, thinking its some kind of hydraulic hook up for a trailer??

question for you all
is it some what easy for swapping some of the panels to the series 3 from the 2a, Like the outer skins of the fenders

more pics to follow

thanks for the help and all of the great wisdom you all share !!

Thanks

Chad

How soon do you want to start your "adventure"
The IIa in the picture should be considered a parts vehicle, anything more then that will be very time consuming, frustrating for a first rover and costly
Lets see the series III. most parts can be used on the III..out of curiosity what are they wanting for the IIa

I would say from the pictures both frames are toast and the panels straight but will require a lot of work to get off and reuse. The hose was probably from a PTO device and possibly a hydraulic winch or device.

Having purchased a vehicle in this state you need to ask yourself how far are you willing to go. If the frame is toast the bulkhead is toast as well probably. They are erector sets so swapping parts could be done and is easier than most, but finding a good bulkhead is a problem. You will need to decide the interior of a 3 or a 2 as that will let you know which bulkhead to use.

Having done some of this I would pass no matter how cheap and get a better start. These would be used to augment a good solid base with parts.

Value for both 500 or less and I am being generous. (considering the need to tow out of there and the weeks to dismantle, the corrosion will eat into the body panels in places, and the fact almost every nut and bolt will be rusted on and need to be drilled and or cut off)

Have you done a frame-off rebuild? those are ambitious projects, to several people on here, that's be the typical start point; but if you've not done it before, I'd tread carefully if I were you.... what happens is you get started, and 3 years from now it still looks about the same but now with several hundred/thousand hours and a huge pile of parts you found on ebay. Your son will have found girls, surfing, video games (or some combination thereof) - and will lose interest completely in the project... then it will be for sale in the sale section....

you didn't ask for my advice, but here it is anyway (full refunds are given) - buy a good-running Discovery 2 (read what to look for), and go run the wheels off it with your son. Buy both the Series LRs and start collecting parts so that when your son wants his own 4x4 (because he's gone everywhere with you in the soon-to-be-purchased D2), you both can build Series Land Rovers together.... don't start your adventure with a non-runner or your adventure will be a non-starter.
