FSJ who has them

I just picked up this 1983 Brougham with a 360. The body has NO rust...advantage of living in a desert... abut it runns like crap.. and it has a D20 Rear axle! So, I was wanting to set this thing up for Overland, but I am not sure if I want to invest everything into it if it will not suit my needs. First, may need a new motor, $2700 with 100k warantee. and I am thinking 6 inches of lift for 35s or 4 inches for 33s. I dont trust the D20 with big tires, but have read a lot about strengthening them. May look at D60 swap or D44.
I had a TJ built to the hilt that would climb a wall, but this is for overland travel where I imagine I will need a vehicle that can handle hundreds of miles of sand, and Level 3.0 trails.
So my first questions are:
1:What size lift do I need to run 33s and what size for 35s?
2: Has anyone run the D44 front and D20 rear with big tires with success?
3: How about the Select track T-case? Will it hold up?
4: How about the design of the steering? Do I NEED crossover?

Any help you can offer would be appreciated. I am trying to see if the cost will be worth it or to scrap this rig and start with a different platform.

Well first let me tell you owning a FSJ, as many older 80's vehicles are, can be a head banging ordeal. Having said that I own 8 of them and only 3 are running. I agree with above, check the running problems before a new engine is ordered. I have bought many FSJ's with a "bad valve" and found it to be a EGR stuck open, or pre-heating flapper valve stuck closed. These are just a few issues that can come up.

As far as running 35's....

This is my 88' GW with 35's on it. It's not easy and requires a lot of lift if you don't, as I didn't, want to cut the fenders to make them fit. Bushwacker makes a XJ flare for a 4- door and can be made to fit and looks good IMO. For me to fit these tires I had to install 6-front springs, 3/4 longer GM rear shackles on the front, shackle flip the back, add-a-leaf, and add-a-overload. Still wouldn't clear without rubbing and I didn't want to limit up travel so a body lift was installed. If I had it to do again I would us user TAD's kit for the front and rear and even then I would add the bushwacker flares. This would give one all the clearance they would need.

Here's a few pictures of a GW with bushwackers....

I want a Gladiator

Hoping to see more pickup pics here. I had a '78 Wagoneer with the 401. I'm hoping to find a running Gladiator to fix up for my son. If anyone hears of one in Northern California let me know.

I had a lot of rust in the floor of the bed so I swapped on a flat bed....

I then lifted it using Hellcreek springs 4" springs in the front and cutting the rear post mounts off and installing 79 Dodge 3/4 springs and mounts...

Since the truck is used for plowing I wanted to have more weight on the rear end and more storage. So I swapped a service bed on it...

And now I in the process of changing out the front and rear ends for a Dana 70 dually in the rear and a Chevy Dana 60 dually for the front. I have also purchased a dump bed to install on it. I'll have to run singles for plowing season but most of the year it will have chormed duals on it to handle the weight....

The rear is in but the front is still in the works. Here's a mock up picture with the front chorme steel wheels.

Yeah, I may end up with one or two in the "collection" eventually. There's so many other vehicles to collect also though! :D

Plans for it are a mild lift, 33's or 35's, winch bumpers, rocker guards, a pre 78 grill and round headlights, and interior and seats from a 90 Grand Wagoneer. The seats and grill are already in but I've not touched this project for a year now. Here's the focus for this project except with a black and white paint scheme...

Its on route. Tentative ETA is tomorrow :)...

At one point in my life I had a 1967, 1997, and a 2007 parked in the same driveway.. Just needed the 77 and 87 to complete the collection. Maybe one day :)
