five people would be hard, i did build an off road caravan years ago for 5 people, 2 adults and 3 kids .

The secret is get rid of the kids
then you only have to accommodate yourself and the cook
I put mine in the navy because its now illegal to send them down the coal mines

So Alan are you building your slide on from scratch
Ive been looking into suitable jacks and cant seem to find anything that will lift a reasonable load high enough to get under the canter while offering reasonable stability
figure I might have to buy individual hydraulic rams and set up my own system

I know the slide on is some way off but Ill do my part and try to find a colour that goes well with beige so we wont clash on the road :wings:

now im doing design work for the navy I find the camper in my mind always ends up looking like frigate

WOW....JUST READ THE ENITRE THREAD!!! Good on you mate! I was looking at your rims. Have you got any reports form people who have bought them from you about the offsets? Are they tracking correctly? Is your offset 105mm? Thanks. I am in the states and ordering rims this week, and am a little confused on my rims. Want to run supersingles. 16x8 5 bolt pattern for an 92 fg140 swb. Thanks.

Hi yes the rims are 105mm offset they track within a few mm's front to back, there's a few people on here with these wheels, they are available in the states.. 16x8 5 stud no problem.

Yeer will be building it from scratch ( what a sucker I am) anyway I can't help it it's addictive! i did find some electric legs that will work i will see if i can find them again, they were remote control so all 4 legs raised at the same time. the only issue i see with a slide on is the water tanks, grey water, black water etc, build them in the camper or separate under the truck.

Stu tried getting rid of kids but they are all under 7 and I think the lock you up for that.

Alan I'm interested why more people don't go hydraulic. I'm from an earthmoving background and you could combine winch, legs, compressor and recovery gear all in one power pack.

Stu, have you looked at the Rieco Titan camper jacks?
They will lift 1130Kk each (2500Lbs) and you can get them with a central/wireless controller, that control all four jacks. From memory (I have a set for lifting my roof) they have over a metre of extension.
Not overly cheap (about $2.5K) but they are quite well built and definitely better than the Happijac camper jacks, in my opinion.

Hi Alan,

Well done on the progress of the chassis as usual....I couldn't see from the pics and its always hard to tell from pics anyway but have you got any gussetting on the tow hitch to stop sideways flex? Just a thought....something an engineer pulled me up on a long time ago.

Re: tank placement with a slide-on......this depends entirely on your reasons for going a slide-on in the first place.

If your reason is to be able to set up camp with the slide-on sitting on legs while you run around in the truck freely then obviously tanks in the camper.

If your reason is purely to store the camper at home when not needed and if the truck is needed for a seprate business purpose, then tanks under the tray mounted low in the chassis.....if you go that way then hot water tank, main water tank(s), pump (s) and an external shower or tap set in a bin under the tray. Then in the hot'n'cold circuits run a couple of quick connect couplings so as to connect the camper when required. Same goes or batteries too.

The second setup can result in a better vehicle as far as space, weight and CoG are concerned....a camper that needs to be able to support itself on legs will need a decent floor frame. .... So weight of a slideon (especially the first option) would typically be more than a permanently fixed camper but you've got to do do what you have to. Most of the -slide-ons we've had anything to do with were guys like bobcat owners who needed the truck during the week and loaded up on the weekend.

Great news, Ill wait till you start then learn from your mistakes (that's just the kind of guy I am)
Was thinking of doing a small water tank (40L ish) under the sink within the body, already have 100L between the chassis rails
have found out from my travels if your frugal with water it will last
grey water if your in suburbia it goes down the metro drain (caravan parks etc) in the bush I drain it onto trees crying out for a drink (its clean grey water)
Black water well I have a thetford cassette toilet and most towns have the capacity to empty them
and in a slide on where space is at a minimum every inch counts
As far as legs go I agree with Shannon - hydraulic electric pump with a hand pump back up
After having to load my V strom onto the back of the truck by hand because the electric winch relays were full of the Pilbra and knackered Ill choose oil over lecky jibbers
after all the stand by system to electricity is handraulic.

I should have about 14' x 7' to play with which will be just enough for 2 people with a shower and dunny,, five people would be hard, i did build an off road caravan years ago for 5 people, 2 adults and 3 kids i think that was 16' triple bunks at the back for the kids and the front dining table made a double bed for us at night it work really well.
