Forgive me for asking, but what is a bastard pack? Is that just a less subtle way of saying add-a-leaf or is it something totally different?

Homebuild leaf pack. Mine, for example, is made up of two different XJ/XJ packs per side. Gives me extra arch, as well as extra thickness, which, since our jeeps are spring over, adds to the over height gain. Got just about 1.5-2" of lift over stock, but since my old leafs were sagging, I got about 4" overall of lift. very big improvement. :)

Another common bastid pack formula is to use packs from an S10 blazer, mainly the top leaf with the eyes cut off, and then a mix and match of the rest of each of the packs, with the main, eyed XJ leaf still on top. That usually gets you about 4-5" lift.

Mine only netted a 2.5" lift over stock :(

Working on the pics still. Nothing much to show, but still...

Also, edited the first post to more accurately reflect an issue - the thunk comes when I take off - not when I stop. Nearly 100%. If I take off extra slow and smooth, no problem. But that is not alway easy to do with a 4.0 HO

thanks for the replies!

wow, really? :(

Well at least your driveline angles aren't super maxed out... but thats definitely a bummer after all the work you did, I'm sure...

Well I added 2" shackles to get my 4.5" lift. No worries though since I have an SYE and rewelded my spring perches for proper pinion angle :ylsmoke:

Ok - a bit of an update and a couple of questions:

Took the stock as all get-out rig for a wee trip along a frozen river today. It was nice and smooth and I quickly remembered how nice a small rig is for maneuverability and visibility. All in all, it was a comfortable trip with a few deep water crossings and lots of big moguls. Nothing fell off.

So, now I need to address a few problems - sticking rear brakes, dry as a bone rear drive line, and rattling cat. Should be easy enough, so I want to start considering a lift. I drug a few time in the snow, but about 3" of additional clearance and the tallest tires I can fit will get where I want to go with this particular rig. Any recommendations? I've always been a fan of OME, but there are a lot of choices. Looking for a SMOOTH ride with easy articulation.

Thanks!

RE lifts are nice. I have a 4.5 black mtn, basically rebranded rough country, and if I was to do it over, I would only go 3" and go with an RE kit.

I will say it again, in case anyone is listening: I LOVE MY OME 2" HEAVY LIFT!

I haven't had an XJ but I had a Rancho lift on my '78 Wagoneer and a Rough Country Lift on my '86 CJ-7 and they were both horrible. I spent the money this time and the ride is great! I just put on 30x9.5x15 BFG's and I love the look and height I got. Just my 2 cents.

Oh by the way I got everything from Sierra Expeditions, Wil.

I'd go with 2x front springs from Rough country and the top two products here. http://staangsfab.com/products-1/jeep-cherokee-xj/

After I bought my first bumper from Staangs fab I dont shop anywhere else. The long arm kit is ridiculously overbuilt and will outlast anything I've ever seen.

The rear coils allows simplicity of just having front and rear coils, eliminates head aches and gives you a much better ride.

Then ofcourse add the various other things like shocks, I'd go with a set of Bilstein shocks. I have no problem running RC springs but for a long journey im not sure I'd want to put up with their shocks.

I'm not willing to put a lot into this particular project. A mild lift, no conversion - as nice as that would be - bigger tires and small light bar for the front is all this Jepp is gonna get. It is a great platform but I'm not 100% sold just yet - it has several small issues that I want to see worked out first - rear drive line, leaking tranny plug & cooler hose, exhaust work, and rear brake rebuild. It is pretty, however.
