Hello guy, newb with 89swb bone stock and ready to rock

Hi, my name is Joe and I just picked up an 89 Raider due to a very fond memory I have of wheeling one with my dad when I was young. This one is blue, bone stock, 200k mi, and was mine for the hefty price of $300 with a bad motor. I have another motor sourced (actually an entire d-50 with a Weber and 31s, plus a 3" BL that may/may not swap) for $300

I have sourced 16" Toyota steelies and 265/75 BFG A/T's for it already, if the 31's prove to be too dinky.

The questions I have:

In a local yard is a nearly un-picked 6/93 SR with and auto trans. The only thing that looks to be pulled are the dash guages. My *question* is about whether I can swap in the rear locker without converting to the entire axle w/coils (mine is obviously leaf-sprung).

Also, is there anything else worth pulling to swap easily? That is, besides the front suspension and brakes (I **DID** search a bit before posting). Specifically will the bouncy seats/rails fit? My rig sadly does not have them. What about the back seat? its very very nice and reclines. I bet its too wide but still, gotta ask and I can exactly drive my rig there yet. anyway, its all there... engine/trans/tcase/axles so I would like to know what to pull before its all gone. steering wheel maybe?

Third, what is the proper designation to use for google searching? gen 1/gen1/genI/gen 2/gen2/genII??

Finally, There is also a 2000 sport with no motor and some bad rearend damage, anything useful in that? maybe the tall console lid? foglight switch? from my quick glance those looked nice.

Thanks and I look forward to becoming a post-whoring fact-monster myself one day, like I see a few of you are already.

The '89 Raider is a Gen I Montero. If you have a leaf spring rear suspension (4-cyl.), the Montero Sport rear axle on a leaf spring setup is a match. If you have coil rear springs (6 cyl.), the Gen II (92-97(ish)) Montero axle with air locker bolts in.

Welcome. ;)

To revive this thread since I am nearly on the road:

On that last note... I cannot for the life of me find a decent writeup on WHAT PARTS need to be pulled for the upgrade. I plan on doing a mild T-bar crank and will need to correct the camber (right??) and I would not be against having larger brakes.

Short answer on the SR axle into a 4 cyl is no you cant. The axle shafts are larger and the third member wont fit into the 4 cyl housing. If you feel like grinding off all the spring and shock mounts it is possible to swap the entire rear end assembly with a lot of work and modding your drive shaft.

If your looking for bolt in, you need to find a leaf sprung Montero Sport with the locker, and swap out the whole rear end.

alright Thank you for the heads up. Now on my short list of wants is a 97-99 Sport, correct?

PROGRESS so far:

I scored two bouncy seats at the yard the other day, one 6-bolt from a '90 and the other a 4 that was practically rusted into the '84. $15 apiece was more than fair. I also nab the metal grille from the 84 (no badges on it though) and am really thinking about going back for the stubby rear bumper.

I pulled the good motor from the donor pickup, blasted the mud off, and am preparing to eliminate the balance-shafts, replace the water pump while I am in there, as well as the pan gasket, the front and rear main seals, the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, and the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and all belts. Did I mention I work at a parts store?

I also obtained some 285/70r17 Cooper Discoverys on Toyota FJ cruiser steel wheels that I plan on painting white if I can find the wheel spacers that allow them to fit over the hub. should look pretty cool with the metallic blue paint.

NOW FOR A QUESTION:

To confirm with you gurus, I just need to crank the torsion bars up a it, put lift shackles in the rear, and swap in gen2 UPPER control arms to correct the camber? is that it?

Thanks guys.

That should work. Remember don't crank them too much or you may have CV issues.

Hey guys long time no update. Just as I finish up the rebuild of the g54b the shop where I have been working on my rig decides to move locations, so now I am at a point where I start gathering parts for the next upgrade.

I went back and really looked over the 94 SR from the yard and found that it had a few goodies. I got the bouncy seat rails and the factory adjustable shocks to hoard away until I find a suitable gen2 or sell if I don't. Time will tell.

What I need advice on is the axles. I found out that they are 4.875 ratio so I want them for that at least, or do I? What size ring gear are they? Will I be able to swap the gears into a locked rear diff in the future? The rear has a V62 code and the front is FC1 if that helps. I can get the rear with the lower arms as well as everything in the front from hub-to-hub including steering stuff for $200. I figure its worth it for the brake upgrade and uppers arms alone, but I want to be sure I am not buying stuff I can't use later.

Thanks
