Of those three I think I'd choose Isuzu. MAN and Iveco are common in
Europe, but not in South America or eastern and southern Asia. My
first choice would be Mercedes, just because of the dealer network.

Are you buying a new truck, or used? Have you chosen a route?

My project is to buy a new truck. The route so far would be the following:
Eastern Africa North to south then Madagascar followed by Asia and final Latin America starting by Mexico.

I would add Mercedes Atego 4X4 to your list, due to serviceability worldwide.

What to choose between a Heavy or Light 4x4 expedition truck?

I am looking to build a 4x4 expedition truck to travel around the world. I am hesitating between choosing a heavy truck such as a MAN or Unimog or Iveco and a light truck such as the Isuzu NPS 300.
What would be your recommendation and why?

One point to consider for a Round The World truck is that an NPS or Fuso FG can be made to fit in a container for ease of shipping. Everything is secure and therefore you can leave your gear onboard and the cost is less. Much less.

Big trucks might be OK for wide open spaces with no mountain tracks to negotiate but in practice, many roads are narrow with sharp bends and big trucks struggle to get around the tighter bends - and a similar problem exists in negotiating small villages. When you get into really wild country, often the roads are pushed through by normal four-wheel drives and full-size trucks just can't get through without a lot of bush-bashing. Low overhead bridges, narrow road bridges - all good reasons to go smaller rather than larger.

I ended up with a heavy truck due to the self-sufficiency requirement of a large amount of fuel and water.
An 4x4 nps 300 seems near ideal, if available.
But it's all about trade offs. When in doubt I would go light. But know for sure the plan to make the subframe and cabin structure light.

Hi,
Well everyone has his favorite make/model. We have chosen a Mercedes because of the Dealer Network worldwide.
We also liked the the Toyota (HJZ), has a good service around the world. Was just to small for us. Which from the ones you are giving as a option, I will assume, it will be also to small.
The other option would to build one from scratch. But lots of work and only a good Idea if you can do all (or at least most of it) yourself.

You said you wanted to buy new. Well new ones have a lot of bells, but thoase are things that can break.

I would choose a older model with very little elektronik. There are very nice models, which are in like new condition, even though they are 20-25 years old. Prices are also way down at the time.

If you like a new model, I personally like the Mercedes Zetros.

Just make a list what you really want. How much extras and things you really want and NEED. This is probaly the hardest part, since all those nice things/options sound like you need to have them. But they add weight and some things can stop your vehicle if they break.

Have fun searching for your Expeditionvehicle.

Hi,
Just posted in your other Thread.
We have chosen a heavier Truck. A Mercedes 917 AF.
This is a 9T Model, which has another 2T reserve.
We are planning to weigh in at about 7-7,5T once finished and fully fueled and stocked. Meaning ~600L Diesel, ~300L Water, 150kg of Batteries & stocked for 2 Adults & 2 Kids.

So it is a little about what do you want in the Truck.
Bathroom, Dinette, Kitchen, Storage, Bed, How many people, Fuel, Water, .....

Lot of open questions that will change the outcome and of course personal favorites.
