Beer and a bet!!
1996 sitting in Puffy's Pub in Manhattan and I got into a bet with some mates that I couldn't ride accross the USA. Gauntlet down I buggered off home to the UK to raise a little money. Brought a Rand McNally USA Map. photocopied the pages then took a highlighter through my proposed route. Panniers on the bike North Face Tent, Coleman stove, and a truck load of other crud' and I left Manhattan. Immediatly got lost in Hoboken but that was only one of three times I got lost. Went East West. I would now in retrospect pony up the flight and do West East (winds). 36 days L8r ended up at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Coast to coast cost around $1500.00 = 3to4 hot meals a day and sleeping in tent anywhere!!
DO IT........... IT's a wicked tale to tell the family.
Take plenty of beer money and be nice to all and every local because you are representing..
Most of all DO NOT Ride Before sunrise and after Dark.
