How to weld with dual batteries, jumper cables and a welding rod- video

For stick welding Al E4043, reverse polarity (electrode positive).
If you're thinking a Land Rover body panel E3003 might work better, but using batteries would probably be too hot for something that thin.

I can't think of a circumstance requiring a body panel to need to be welded to get out of the field and back home. For that, I would say carry a small piece of sheet aluminum, a hand drill, tin snips and a rivet gun with some aluminum rivets of various lengths.

"Getting back home" welding is chassis, SUSPENSION and power train!

Does anyone have any thoughts on
a) What this will do to your batteries? (I can't imagine a direct short is good for them)
and
b) How long you could weld like that without draining your starting battery?

It is not a direct short. You will get around 100 amps or so through the 1/8" rod, maybe a bit more, much less than a starter. Assuming 50 A-h batteries, you have half an hour, which is a huge amount of time.
 
3 batteries work even better. We had to do it at TOTH. 2 didn't get enough penetration for us. 3 did. Good video!

Great video, makes me want a dual battery setup and this is one more reason to add to the list.
