If you were going to have a do everything Tacoma or Tundra, what model would you get.

Yup 1 gen tundra, way more interior space and comfort, v8 torque and something people forget about the box is almost a foot deeper than a taco

There's more too it that just that. Given the Tacoma's 15mpg and 21 gallon tank (a rough 300 mile range) you'll pass everything but a gas station. As mentioned for me personally HAVING to fill up EVERY week or sooner just to go back and forth to work sucked. The diesel even getting just 25mpg will allow me a range of at least 500 miles, will stretch me to every other week, much more reasonable IMO and you can't relate that time saved and convenience a direct monetary value.
.
Also I'm not interested in a full size truck so there are no other options for me ;) For the OP that may be relevant though.

Scott said he was getting 24 mpg in the new Tacoma...empty of course. Which is 95% of my driving. Pretty sure I can achieve his same mileage numbers as majority of my driving is done at 55-65 mph.

I am just not seeing the value of the diesel Colorado, that DEF system isn't going to be cheap to repair when it goes. Have buddy who is a diesel mechanic....he will have no problem putting his kids through college that is for sure! :D That Ford 6.0 was the goose that laid golden eggs....now with DEF systems...yahoo, cha-ching!

Think I rather save $8K and just stop for fuel more often...however that is just me...but if I can hit 24 mpg like Scott (in the TRD Pro with a lift and oversize tires, even!)...wouldn't have to stop more often anyways.

The 4.0L is a great engine. One of the more noticeable advantages of the 3.5L is the new 6-speed automatic transmission. It keeps the motor in the meat of the power band for more of the acceleration cycle, so this truck really does feel strong. I still cannot believe the fuel economy in stock form. We could get 24mpg at 55mph. The biggest test for the drivetrain will be when we load these trucks up with accessories and larger tires. I am curious how that will affect the mileage.

I'm not sold on diesels, either. Especially now with all the garbage you've got to deal with. I do love the range, but you don't need a diesel to get range. (I've got a 36 gal tank in my gas truck, which is nice to have).
.
I know on some older Tacomas, people retrofit F150 tanks on there for more capacity. (Although that means a Ford part in a Toyota!!). If that's not an option, I'd rather spend $1-2k on a rear bumper and put a couple of cans of gas on there.

I think they'll sell...as we are living in the age of $40-50K midsize trucks! yeowza! I won't buy one though. If they didn't have DEF...I would be all over it, I just don't see those things going long term without repair. I have to put very little money into my Tacoma over the past 14 years...next truck I want at least 15 years out of it too. Today, the better half told me to get a new truck by the end of the year...she saw the new AT Habitat, said ok... you need a new truck. ;)

Certainly don't need the range, I have been living with a 15 gallon tank and 18-20 mpg for years now. New Tacoma at 20-24 mpg with a 21 gallon tank will seem like a luxury!

Maybe if GM put the diesel in their WT model like what Ram did, and got the price point down to $30K....I "might" consider it...the DEF system would still have me worrying in the back of mind...sell it, sell it, before the warranty is up! That isn't me though...I want this next truck to get me to retirement.

2nd gen double cab 4x4 (not trd) sounds like it would fit your needs. If you start sleeping in the back get a flippac or that sweet new at habitat. If you start wheeling harder add aftermarket lockers.

Can you retrofit the older Gen 2 Tundras that had the smaller tank with the larger one?

I'm not sure, but I would think it wouldn't be a hard swap? Physically, anyway. Don't know if a fix for minor things, like "DTE (distance to empty)" can be fixed or not.

...If they didn't have DEF...I would be all over it....

Na, you wouldn't....

Ha ha!...you're right...then I start thinking about those spendy injectors and fuel pumps....one buddy just yesterday was complaining about replacing the fuel pump in his Ford....$$$$! New mountain bike...or new fuel fuel pump....craaaaap...

FYI - Unless I've missed something major, the Tundra has never been offered with a factory rear electric locker, regardless of trim package.

Tacomas with the TRD package "can" be equipped with a factory electric locker, but my understanding is that this isn't true in every case.

I've owned a '01 AC Tundra, '08 DC Tundra, and an '03 DC Tacoma. For strickly camping the '08 was nice, but the mileage sucked. I'm partial to my current '03 Tacoma, but it can be space challenged at times.
