i drove a 99 4runner today, base model. had some dents and dings, but i really wasnt that impressed by them. was comfortable, but i just cant put my finger on it. i need to hunt down a 4 door, 4 wheel drive tacoma of around the same year and try that out. what year did they change the body? i dont much like the new one.

Well I was also pulled in by the Toyota hype.. my 03 tacoma (acquired with 73K on the odo) now needs front diff repair, as do many other tacomas both 1st and 2nd gen.. as well as Tundras.. quite a few of the folks who got it fixed under warranty received entirely new front diff carrier assembly and has experienced repeat of the issue over time. Quite scary if you ask me!

Toyota reliability? it's a toss up IMO..

looks like the links show new tundra has diff issues. and the tacoma ones i found were on lifted trucks. all of that searching and i came up with very few tacoma or runner issues. so i would say that a tacoma or a 4-runner would be a safe bet. but dont buy a new style tundra and live in a cold climate. then you diff would make noise.

is this true?
i really have never heard of anytihng like that

I had Jeep fever once ... and as my buddy said to me, it was a $8000 lesson. I have an '02 double cab 4x4 Taco - have owned since new. The only issue I have had is with the corrosion issues on the frame but "the fix" seems to be working ... this is the second time applying. Make sure you get that checked out when looking at the 01 - 04. Otherwise than that, it has been scheduled maintenance, brakes and tires ... even still has the factory battery! The only complaints I have is the seats for long distance drives. The company is standing behind the frame fix with a 15 year warranty which is reassuring but I preferred to have the frame replaced after the fix didn't work the first time. The dealer went to bat for me but Toyota Canada didn't which cost them a 24 year loyal customer ... yes I am still bitter  but I still love my truck :smiley_drive:

i found a 2002 double cab taco 4x4 for 11,900..doesnt look like a scam. even has a number.:victory: im guna give it a shot. do the 4runner and taco drive and feel differently on the road? i wasnt too impressed by the 99 runner i drove today. but i really like the looks of the 02 dc taco.

i hear ya on the jeep fever, ive poured more money into that piece of chrysler plastic than i could have ever thought i would, but maybe i can still spare myself.

I have double cab 2003 4wd and no problems on it. My first tacoma was a 96 had recall on heads. Drove it till 175,000. No problems and saw a lot of off road and dirt. the year the body style changed was 2005 onwards bigger and bulkier... met another customer at Demello offroad and he had a 2007 taco and sold it and got a 2004 doublecab taco as he prefered the earlier body style and also felt they were better built overall.

its really difficult to find double cab 4x4 on the tacomas in the older body style..
anyone know any good places to look? i dont like the newer ones.

why are some many tacomas 2wd?
and then why do guys get the 4 door tacomas and put bedcovers on them, when they could have gotten a 4runner?

sorry for all the questions, still figuring this stuff out. thanks

Can't offer much help with your question but cool to see you're from Evans.

I used to live in Evans and went to LHS. I miss it.

ebay, craigslist, autotrader... or forums for finding used Tacomas.

I have an '01 Tacoma dc with a cap on the back... reason is because I want my tools and mess in the back on not in the cabin. I carry motorcycles and gas occasionally too and don't want the gas smell in the truck. Also, hauling construction supplies (wood, ect.) won't work too well with a 4-Runner. I manage quite well though with my 5ft. bed.
