Principle reason for getting the IG is to explore Central & South America where ULSD is not available. Cayenne diesels got our attention after Jan Kalmar and two friends set the world speed record driving from Nord Cape Norway to Cape Town SA in less than nine days. He took his many other places like Australia to drive the entire coastline. Both ours and Jan's are totally stock 958 diesel with only body protection added. Below, next day temps were -40F, blizzard, 60mph wind for a -90F windchill - previous day ice raced on the frozen Yukon River at Dawson City. Second time to do this as part of a ten day 5,500 mile rally event. Photo from 2020 linked video 2016 - our rig is at 4:09. Given that use case I'd think a gas LC200 or equivalent Lexus would do the trick given parts availability and commonality with sim rigs. It's less about capability and more about what rig is going to be the least likely to break down and the easiest to find parts for....

Both have heavy steering and very basic HVAC controls. I would compare the Grenadier's build quality to a 4Runner, really good, but nowhere close to a GWagen.

The Gren's engineered design is to be simple and purposefully built, which it achieves by flying colors. Non-motorized seat controls is a prime example...I love it.
I have a G and the body/frame is on par with a G. What do you think they did for that 1500lb weight difference between A 4 runner, and a Grenadier? stick a massive chunk of iron under the passenger seat?

The reason you buy a used Gwagon, is first of all, for the luxury trim, the exact opposite of simplicity. Then maybe the drivetrain. Then maybe the dealer network. And lets not forget badge conscious fanboy ********. Brand new its 2x the price and people will think you have more money than you have. On the flipside, one has to then keep in mind the sticker shock of Merc "out of warranty repairs". It's pure joy.

If a person actually WANTED a non luxury, new Gwagon, reminiscent of the Europa unit 463's, that had C class interiors and not S class trim like the later 463's, This is it.

But telling me you opened the doors, drove the Gren, then got out, and your impression was 4runner is friggin' funny.

Rock-crawling capability?

I’ve watched a lot of the videos available and all indicate the truck is very capable for forest roads but what about more serious/technical trails? Do you guys think the IG could do a trail that’s rated 5/10, say something like Black Bear Pass CO with just a swap for 33” tires? I was looking to go back to a 200 Series and I‘m intrigued by the IG. Thanks
Theres a really good Aussi youtuber that recently tested a Gren, a 300, a patrol, and defender2. It would be worth your time to look at finding that vid, if this is the question you are asking. The 200 and 300 arent really worlds appart for off roading, and the relatively large amount of rear articulation on the LC's seems to more than compensate for the IFS.

Yes, that was my impression on build quality. Sounds like we both daily drive an early w463.

Yup - we knew that was going to happen! MSRP is one thing now you have the "street value"....crazy people spend that kind of money for something that was $20k less the day before, out of sheer principle more than anything.

So...US models have a speed limit sensor. Whenever you go over the posted speed limit, your car will beep at you continuously. Software update in development. Prepare to be annoyed...or follow the speed limit.
Am I reading that right, where it'll beep if you are over the limit? Like...any over, or 5 over, or....? This keeps getting better.
