awesome build. are there any injection pump tweaks available on that engine for more power and mileage?

Not that I know of yet, it's so new to the U.S. market, though I have yet to cruise the Ford Ranger forums in Argentina, which is where it's very popular (and I believe one of the build plants).

It does not need more power, but I could definitely see better mileage tweaking, though I expect it to get better over time.

I'm hoping to pick it up next week. We had some problems with the radiator and head gasket, maybe from the factory, not sure yet (may never be sure). But TLC is taking care of it.

Speaking strictly for myself, I wouldn't dream of messing with an engine that can pull an FJ60 up the Tecate Divide in fifth gear and still get 27 mpg.

I've still got your old motor if you want to trade back. :sombrero:

I'd be curious to hear exactly what went bad. Any known issues with this motor? It sounds like the perfect swap from your reports here.

That is what I'm talking about. I still contend that this motor in an FJ80 coupled with the H55F would work well even without a partime 4wd conversion.

Sorry to hear of the issues. While they have the head off ask them if it is a piston in sleeve design will ya.

  Wait... Hills... Fifth gear ??? 27MPG WOW, what's that like... Ever since I put the 33's on my truck hasn't seen 5th very much except on long tail-wind assisted down hills ;) THat is flat out awesome that you're getting that kind of performance right out of the box. How are your EGT's pulling long grades in 5th like that??? I can imagine that the Turbo is screaming and the motor's chugging pretty good eh. The EGT's ahve got to be pretty close to max at that point I'd imagine.

This motor sounds like it'd haul my loaded 1st Gen 4Runner up over the mountains real nice eh. This is such a sweet truck, I've always loved 60 Series and Diesel's are a real winner for me in nearly any rig. I love it, great truck and the color is one of my fav's too. how much more can I blubber over this thing... let's see... I LOVE IT!!!!! Makes me want to buy that 60series for sale in the neighorhood...

Cheers

Dave

Roseanne what was it that you didn't like about the 4.11s and the 235s?

The above 2 posts answer that pretty well. Way too low gearing - not needed at all. This is an overlanding vehicle, which means very very little % of its travel time is "rock crawling" or anything that needs such low gearing. On the other hand the majority of its time is either dirt road cruising or moderate highway, where having easier top gear is best.

Low gearing also = worse mileage.

"Tecate dived"? Did I write that?

I just drove the 60 from L.A. to Prescott, and it ran superbly. That long, long uphill heading east toward Chiriaco Summit was all fifth gear and 65 mph, AC on. Amazing.

Next up is sound deadening. That direct-injection engine is noisy.

Jonathan, you might give me a call. I just did a complete Dynamat install on my F350 SD with Gary Wescott's assistance. I have db numbers and suggestions.
