Top Gear did a comparison between the Fiata Panda and a Land Rover Discovery (or Range Rover?) and the Fiat performed better offroad.

Yeah saw that. I think its one of the last episodes currently available on Netflix instant streaming for top gear if anyone wants to catch it.
I think the only thing that killed it in the straight up test they did was the fact that it was muddy and it pretty much had car tires on it.

Now, I understand that Jeep, like every other line of vehicles, has to meet tighter and tighter mpg requirements for their fleet. And that they have to have some higher mpg models to bring up the fleet average to counter balance the JKs and make the gove'ment happy. But...I'm so tired of seeing cool promotionial vehicles in mags and on here that never see the light of day. Sure rigs like the Zuk, the Stripper, the J8, and the Gladiator promise utiltarianism and preformance that attracts the interests of the Jeep inclined, but they never materialize. Instead here comes the Panda variant....Yuck. If I wanted a foriegn wheeler I'd go buy one (and I have). Why would I buy a faux Jeep? I mean really, if you put a Porsche badge on a Chevette does that make it a sports car? I want a Jeep with Jeep bloodlines and DNA, and the heritage that comes when you own a seven slot grill. That Panda aint anything I'm looking for.
Oh well, at least all of our older utilitarian Jeeps will be holding their value for a long time to come.

Keep in mind guys, those other models you hate keep the cash flowing for Jeep to focus on the real Jeeps.
I don't see what the big deal is as long as they keep making the more utilitarian vehicles. You don't have to buy the foo-foo crap.
And Haggis, I agree with you, I'm tired of models that will never see production. Don't tease us like that. For example, unless Jeep is serious about a Jeep pickup stop showing us stuff like the Nukizer and Gladiator.

Also i don't see the problem with the Panda, cool little 4x4 gas sipper, rather drive this than a Yaris or something. The JK isn't being replaced with a Panda so i dont see what the issue is.

Not big on that vehicle. Never seen it before but the first thing that strikes me is the cargo box is not separate from the cab. Basically means it can be used hard.

why would anyone think that under a Euro-owned management that we'd get anything less than this crap from Chrysler. Chrylser has clearly lost the plot.
despite what enviromentalists think we should have, the American consumer still wants three things in their Jeep: utility, horsepower, and value. down with cafe standards.
anyone accepting a Compass or Patriot (Liberty for that matter too) as Jeeps or this FIAT crap product is accepting too little for too much from a now-fading, once-glorious brand of American auto makers. it's all a tarnish on the brand.
i'll keep my XJ- if i wanted a sport capable street wagon- i'd get a Subaru.

Well, under Renault, Jeep came out with the XJ, MJ and the YJ. The ZJ was already being planning for as well.
Fiat is smart enough to know not to change the heart of Jeep. Although, Chrysler has been pretty good at messing with that themselves.
I think the Panda will fit a niche for a low cost entry-level vehicle. The panda has also been in production for a while now so it's got most of it's bugs worked out by now and it could be put into production quickly. (This used to be held by the Wrangler S model). The Wrangler is even more a niche vehicle then it was before. It's not cheap enough anymore to be considered an entry-vehicle. When they had the 4bangers, they were selling a lot of Jeeps to younger drivers. For a long time the Wrangler S had a price under $10,000 by the early 90's it was $12,995. The base Jeep today starts at $21,915.
Anyone remembers ads like this?

BTW it's ironic that Enzo Ferrari said "Jeep is America's only real sports car", and now Jeep is owned by the same company that owns Ferrari
