Kitchen Kit/Chuck Box

Wow! Thanks for the compliments guys . . . and the offers!

I hadn't thought much about it before but . . . it would be cool to sell it as an Ikea-style flatpack kit, complete with hardware, pre-cut piano hinges, screws, hinges, latches, etc.

Unfortunately, my neighbor is selling his CNC machine so these were among the last of the items cut on it.

When I'm finished with the project I'll put together some plans, instructions, and a cut layout for a 4x8 sheet of plywood. . . . which, BTW this only requires 1 sheet of plywood to make the basic box and stand. And another, hm, 1/2 sheet of 1/4" plywood perhaps for some of the internal organizers and boxes such as a utensil drawer.

I hope to have the project finished in the next few weeks and then I can get the plans done.

Oh, and the top of the chuck box when set up is 29 1/4". It was designed to be at the same height as my cargo deck table so that when both are set up at the camp site they could be put together to make for a continuous work surface.

And 29 - 30" is about what a standard table height is.

36" is standard height for a kitchen counter top height or a shop work bench height.

My guess is that there is a cabinet shop in every city with a CNC machine that would love to have some work. It can't cost too much to zip out the pieces.

LUPINSEA could sell the cut sheet info, after putting a copyright on it, and recoup some of his costs.

This is a really nice design. I like how efficiently the materials are used. Very little waste.

Your neighbor had to program CNC machine to cut out panels. This is time intensive and takes a fair amount of skill. Is it possible to get a copy of program?

Great idea, and the Ikea flatpacked put-together sounds like a winner!

About the counter, wouldn't the hinges exposed at the top take away a bit of the counter's usability? It would probably be more expensive and involved, but a set of hinges that remain on the underside of the countertop when opened would seem a better choice in this case.

There are different ways of doing many things on the chuck box. I'm going for more of a budget / cost approach on it. So I went with simple piano hinges. Yes, they are about a 1/8" "rail" on the top surface when it's opened up but I felt that was a reasonable trade off for cost and simplicity.

If you want to see what it's like with them there, find a 1/8" or so rod and put on a flat surface. Then put things on it. Anything bigger than, say, a plate and there is going to be a broad enough base that a 1/8" raised thingy isn't going to affect it. Anything smaller than a plate (bowl, mug, um, salt shaker, etc.) and you can probably set something down on either side of the hinge.

I'd have preferred a flat top but the alternatives didn't strike me as a good trade off.

Anyways, I'm rather blown away at the interest in this project. The whole thing started off as something to help me organize my own camping cookware. So it's sort of set up with my own personal requirements and usage in mind. And in that roll I also have a ~40" x 36" cargo deck that quickly dismounts from my Jeep and has fold down legs so it sets up as a camp table. If I need a big flat space I have the whole table to use (about the size of a card table). The work space on the chuck box is a bonus.
