I built storage on the sides, but left the center open to use. Camping time comes I just throw in a mattress and I sleep like a king. I really want underbed storage, but not enough to give up the sitting headroom I have now.

Well MT, you actually have a RTT there. Pretty neat. Just be careful in the mornings. Getting up and thinking that you are on the ground could have some shocking effects.
I love my PU and shell and I do get out more because of it. My knees are not what they used to be and getting up off the floor of the truck bed or the ground is no longer any fun. So I like having my bed up a little bit. I also like have some head room so I can sit up and read while enjoying that evening shower. I was even thinking about putting music in the back but I realized that I never really listen to music when camping. Just too plumb tickled to death being away from town.
So you fellows sleeping next to your cooler, keeping that last cold one of the night handy, eh?

I love having my tunes. I have a bluetooth speaker (gray box on top of the recovery gear on driver's side in my photo) that can hook to my phone or Ipod touch. I do love the solitude of the woods, but music is so nice. Oldies. Always oldies.

So I got a start. It's not finished by far. I'm thinking I'm gonna sleep on the floor-so no platform. I'm 6'4" and 250. I need some room. But it's taking shape. I want carpet on the floor, and insulation on the topper, window covers, and a bunch of electric (solar powered of course) so here's what I got done so far....

Alas, I can finally contribute! I just got my storage/sleep system functional. Just got back from two nights at the beach. Much better than my old system!

And here are some updated pics. I picked up for free some of the interlocking 1 inch thick hd foam padding. 
I had a couple pieces left over so I cut to size for a seat pad for the tailgate. 
I have a complete build up of the truck over in the domestic rigs section. Here's a quick shot of the rig.
