That sounds like an engine mounting has worked loose or failed - the rubber sometimes perishes ot goes hard, or it can come away from the steel end plates. Shouldn't be hard to find...

Nope. They're still good.. This is also on the side where the motor rubber gets pulled on. They're still ok. This vibration wasn't there yesterday. So today I must have done something (I've played around near the tranny tunnel) that must be the cause of this. There's very little clearance between bellhousing and tranny tunnel. I have to redo the tunnel sometime soon, make it bigger.
It gets annoying, there's always something needing attention. Sometimes (at the moment a bit more than I used to) I just wished I could drive a completely bog standard factory vehicle (not a LR to be honest) just so it would be a quiet comfortable ride... a vehicle that just needs routine maintenance instead of this constant neverending attention to all these little things.. sigh... oh well..

I can't use standard insulation sets made for Series vehicles as I got a totally different trans tunnel and lever layout. The rear passenger and cargo floor are totally different too. I know what stuff I want to use. I just want to get rid of most of the rattles and such first. I got rid of the most annoying one (startermotor hitting 2 of the 3bolts that hold the bulkhead support plate to the chassis on the left hand side on acceleration). But now it developed a new one, it now all of a sudden vibrates more at idle and it resonates through into the rollbar and rear floor area.. bloody annoying!

Four cylinder diesels are annoying no matter what. When I use to maintain a fleet of 4bt cummins powered delivery vans. I was constantly tightening various, miscellaneous stuff. One time I had to re-rivit the body panel sides. They vibrated lose!! Hydraulic engine mounts(gel type) seamed to help a bit, but still a pain. I used dynamat to insulate my firewall and trans tunnel cover works good. BTW,your truck is very cool!!

I've been frequenting this forum as a guest for a while but when I stumbled upon this thread I didn't want to withold you guys some pictures of my 1977 Series III carawagon. After I bought it in mid 2012 I have done some conversions to make the car more suitable for camping and extended travel. Nothing major, just small things here and there to make using the car more enjoyable. She is still a work in progress and as usuall, plenty of idea's but a bit short on fundings

The car pretty much in it's current state


Put on a roofrack and tent I found on a swapmeet


Lockable tube for tent poles and fishin rods


Put on a simple awning


Made a small cabinet for the corner in the roof. (still a work in progress) which actually holds quite a lot of stuff


And to end just a nice picture driving my series through the fog at night!

These big 4 cylinders sure vibrate heaps. Not long after I found the cause of the viration on mine. A bolt that fixes the exhaust to the rollcage had lost its nut. The bolt was vibrating against the tab on the rollcage, hence the noise and vibration went through the cage. And due to the bolt not being tight the exhaust moved a bit an was touching the body. All fixed now.
That rattly old diesel even ripped of the front fixing tab of the exhaust, even though it has a flex joint in it right after the turbo.
Hydraulic engine mounts sound interesting!

hi all, this is my series IIa, which hasn't got a lot of IIa left, early defender doors, lightweight door tops, S3 wings, disco 200tdi engine, lt77 + lt230 transmission. I bought it with all this done and so far i've figured out it needs a lot more done.

so far i've fixed the brakes, a door top, a track rod, a set of wolf rims with xzl's and i managed to paint half of it.

I added some lifting eyes, a tow jow and mounted my old trusty shovel to the front end.
Also some headlight guards left over from an old jeep of mine and removed the lower body skirting.
