Lipstick on a Pig: The 10 Don'ts of Vehicle Modifications

Linear amplifiers work great and are proportionately illegal to their gain.
As a puckish lad, I spoke regularly from my base CB in NJ (only 75 watts) to south Florida, western Canada, and other exotic locations like Arizona.
Inferior? Pish-tosh. Underpowered and poorly tuned is what they are.

Now for my short list of "don'ts":

Illegal and/or dangerous headlight mods. Bootleg HID kits, the IPF kits, Delta garbage, high wattage bulbs, blue Disney-bulbs, etc.
Stop blinding me and get legal.

CB is a fairly ubiquitous communications solution. As such it trumps any and all of the snobbier gizmos in practical day-to-day situations.... (for brevity)

One of the best responses ever. HAM/ 2M is great and all but how many rigs do you actually see with them? Easy answer, hardly any at all (outside of this place). Real life, a CB is perfect. Trail rides where gaps are small, road trains where everyone is just trying to get to the same place and other random things make a CB perfect. Theyre cheap, require no testing or special handles and are simple. I have a CB in the truck and am perfectly happy with it. It does everything that I need it to do and does it perfectly. Sure, range isnt as good with a CB but honestly, do you really need the huge range on a trail ride? How many times have you been on the trail and needed to speak with someone miles away? Its a toy and as much as this list tries to steer people away from gadgets in the cab, many of the vehicles here look like they were built for the Paris- Dakar, not the local fire road. The 2M radio is cool and all and yes the range could be useful, by why is it absolutely needed?

Qualifier: Im buying a handheld and an external antenna set up for the 60 for my trip to Colorado. The cell signal is weak and it will be kept in the cab, or the hiking bag when we leave the truck, for emergency purposes. For trail rides and the drive out there though, my Cobra will be more than enough.

[CB] require no testing...

Every CB I've seen needed significantly more tuning than any other off-the-shelf ham rig.

90% of the time on my trips. I only use CB when "crawling." I am regularly in caravans with many miles between us due to dust conditions, or scouting far, far ahead to see if the pass is clear of snow. The common CB installation does not perform in these common scenarios.

Anecdote: just attended Cruise Moab where the trail rides as you know are much more closely packed and where honestly CB would be fine. I was in a vehicle with CB and we were mostly in the minority of the other hams, it is mainstream.

Fine if you don't want to deal with testing & licensing, but 11mHF was not necessarily the best choice for the CB band. Did you know that CB was originally UHF? Call in MURS or GMRS as alternatives, but not CB.

GMRS seems to be a viable alternative to CB. With all the commercially available 5watt GMRS handset available on the market, most are much better quality, more ergonomic, better battery life and cheaper than the handheld CB's that are available today.

Unfortunately you pretty much have to look to the used market for a UHF mobile for GMRS use. Too bad the FCC mandated the antenna could not be seperated from the radio. a handset with an antenna jack would make a nice little mobile unit. Never understood the FCC's reasoning on that.
