Lipstick on a Pig: The 10 Don'ts of Vehicle Modifications

Northwest Colorado does have a different mentality. That comes from the area we live in and around, we have driveways out here that are impassable to most vehicles. Owning an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive is a must if you want to get to work and home in the winter.

Growing up out here we spend most of our time out side in some of the most beautiful demanding country in the US. We are out on foot, horseback, motorcycles, ATV's, bikes and 4x4's in the summer and snow mobiles in the winter. I have not seen one Ham radio that wasn't on a table and running vacuum tubes. CB's are in a few vehicles and even fewer work right most people carry hand held radios because you can take it anywhere on any equipment. There are a lot of GPS units in back packs out here and some compasses, but most people have grown up in these mountains and can find their way around in a white out and I know some who have proven it.

The one thing you will find almost everyone carries is a cell phone and we have a provider out here that even covers into Vermillion basin.

So here is my advise when in Northwest Colorado. At the very least let some one you trust to send help know where you are going and how long you should be gone, giving them a map with the area you will be in circled is best. A cell phone that can access Union Wireless towers will be more useful to you than a Ham Radio.

Last if you do have SAR's come and rescue you say hi it will be myself, family or friends that get you to safety.

With all due respect, I've never met anyone who doesn't think their local area is special and requires unique circumstances and precautions. The truth is often somewhere in-between.

I have lived and wheeled all over the US and have been around the world, but I may have a soft spot in my heart for the western slope of Colorado, and all the rocky mountains.

I believe having some one you can trust to send help knowing where you are planning to go and a time frame for getting home or contacting them to let them know you are fine is the absolute best practice for any area. Regardless of all the cell phones, walkie talkies, CB's, Ham's, satellites and telekinesis.:snorkel:

lip stick on the pig is those stupid fake beadlock rims. They are solely to make the vehicle they are on a poser.:Wow1:

Oh wow.....the cool factor of having a 2m is way over the top.....so why not be the envy of all the guys. 2m, CB, Spot mounted on dash and lots of antenni (need one of those cell phone curly Q things) w/ a few GPS pukes on roof (one on bull bar)......may be throw in a SAT phone and satellite radio.
Not only are you 'COOL' but you know what your doing.:wings:

Something like this:

..maybe it is a geographic thing as to the popularity of cb or 2m. that would be an interesting thread..

...Kurt's 75 to 90 percent is perhaps true with his core of regular trail companions but is waaaay off the mark when speaking of the 4x4 enthusiast community as a whole. I would never venture a guess at the percentage but it would be very close to the opposite of the sacle that Kurt used. He did preface his statement as a guess though.

Sorry I guess I didn't clarify that comment clearly enough. I'm by no means saying that 75% of all 4x4 users use 2M, in fact I don't even think 75% of all 4x4 users have a comm radio let along a 2M ham. My comment "Obviously I can't say for certain how many ham owning 4x4 users are using 2M only (or primarily) but my gut says at least 75% and likely probably closer to 90% or more", was purely aimed at saying I believe 75%+ of 4x4 users that have ham radio... are using 2M. This likely isn't very regional at least here in the western US where 2M repeaters are far more prevalent for recreation use. Clear as mud? :D

...What he said (at least what I understood) was that of the 4x4 owners who have HAM radios in their trucks, 75 percent of them are on 2m.

So to sum up: Not 75% of 4x4 drivers, 75% of HAMs who are 4x4 drivers.

Spot on, exactly what I was trying to convey.

...Incidentally, I haven't seen any statistics (I'm sure they're out there) but my guess is that a solid majority of the HAM radios sold in the US each year are 2m units.

It would be interesting to know the numbers particularly amongst the 4x4 crowd but I can't imagine it going any other direction.

******! Chrome gas cap cover!? The other infractions are tolerable but this is the most egregious of violations Bill. I'm so disappointed.

Less wind resistance...

They didn't have the black one I wanted in stock and I got the chrome one for the same price.
It always bothered me a little.
