I hope everybody realizes that this entire thread is just based on individual opinion.

You know what they say about opinions.

It is MY opinion that if you like the mods you've done and haven't compromised the safety of your rig while doing said mods, than you're good to go. It bothers me when Mr. X or Mrs. Y types something like it is some universal law or truth when infact it is just their opinion and doesn't represent any facts which might apply to the reader's individual situation or scenario.

The pessimist in me looks at threads like this as a means for those contributing to sway individuals to buy particular products.

As long as this is all taken lightly than its all good, I suppose.

Information on internet forums is best consumed with a grain of salt.

It is also wise to view it much like you view mass media outlets - don't base your decision on just one source of information. Get info here, get info there, get more info somewhere else - weigh all of those opposing views, listen to your gut, and do what makes you happy.

Did you read the article? 10 Don'ts

It makes no mention of products. With regards to facts that support any of the concepts, I would be curious which ones you believe are not 'factual'.

Thanks.

Number 8 is not a fact. It is an opinion. ;)

8. Don't buy a CB - It will just prove to be a source of frustration and bad communications. You are better off with smoke signals.

"come-in Candy Cane

For reasons already well detailed, CB can sometimes be better than HAM. The fanciest 2m radio in the world is a paperweight if everyone else in your group is running CB.

I don't fit into a box defined by those who run this site, write magazines, build "special" equipment, or even by popular opinion. I build my own stuff, cut my own path, and decide through usage and field testing what I think works and doesnt work. I come here for ideas of what I'd like to try next, but to come here and tout that there is only 1 way to do this, or 1 way to do that is adolescent at best.

I love my CB
I love my stinger bumper
I love my airbag suspension
I love my engine mods
I have stuff from that big orange box store all over my rig and it performs well when applied properly.

Some of the bullet points in the 10 Don't I fully agree with, but only because it corresponds with physics and common sense.

So break it down. It will only add to the discussion. My personal experience has shaped my personal opinion which is always related to bias. You say that you do not fully agree with the bullet point - cool. Lets see the specific 'physics' that are flawed or the 'common sense' that is being questioned. We will all be better for it. I am not trying to be argumentative, I am genuinely interested in your thoughts.

#8 is a contentious one as CBs are currently prolific in the US. It is like any technology, there is contant innovation and movement. In my opinion, the benefit of the CB is cost (i.e. cheap) and popularity in North America. Functionally, it is flawed by the nature of it being a citizens band. The nature of this site is backcountry travel, exploration, etc., which results in long distances, remote locations and potentially significant spacing between vehicles (dust). A HAM radio is simply better IMHO. With a little more money (2M radios can be obtained relatively cheap, even $100) and some time (HAM license) you have a superior communications tool. The 2M radio in my Discovery is 80Watts. That is 20x more powerful than a CB (legally).

It takes some time, but people are converting over and finding the communications so much less frustrating and more effective. We can talk 20 or more miles apart. In cities, we can communicate easily. We all started moving this way with the encouragement of Jack from 4wdTrips. He was right - it was worth the effort.

I suppose my point is 'best practice'. Something that is cheaper or easier is not necessarily a best practice, it is just cheaper and easier. It is best practice to run your vehicle under GVWR.

I think that Spency's creative sentence structure has confused you. (It did me.) I'm guessing that what he meant was this: "I fully agree with some of the bullet points in the list of 10 things not to do, but only because these points correspond with physics and common sense."

You're talking West-Coaster, Scott. "Overlanding" in the east is done on short, steep, muddy, rocky crud, hopping between towns, camping, and various bouts of freeway travel. The CB works great ---- you can shout-down the big-rigs, get local-yocal info, keep the group cohesive.

There are exceptions to every opinion - true that. . .
