Lone Wolf Transglobal Expedition

"....we were to spend the night in no-mans land. This was one of the worst possible outcomes. We have left Iran, not entered Pakistan, and now we are locked in a complex with Iranian and Pakistani truck drivers, slap bang in the centre of the worlds most prolific Heroin smuggling area. "

:Wow1: As rough as that night may have seemed, along with some other incidents you've encountered on the way, these are the once in a lifetime kind of moments. Excellent tales and details from a real expedition.

And where else would you see a rolling Mosque? Great photos from the Middle East. You're showing a side of those countries and people that the western media will never relay. Wonderful, wonderful journals. :clapsmile

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
Wow wonderful.. I just spent about an hour reading up on your diary, wonderful indeed. The stories remind me of the Albert Podell book "Who Needs A Road" - in the end they say it could not be done again due to political situations.. Clearly they are wrong! Congratulations from this envious American!

Wow I just spent another 2 hours getting caught up. What a wonderful adventure... Perhaps tonight I'll tear into the Europe segment which I skipped. Wonderful, just wonderful reading.. Daniel is very eloquent! Cheers, Andre

Thank you for the compliments everyone! One of the main highlights from the Europe section is visiting Count Dracula's castle. Sadly, I still need to make the photos on that page the right size (as opposed to postage stamp sized), so here are some of the highlights:

We just couldn't resist, make of this what you will

This is one of the most amazing roads in the world, leading up to the castle, and at the other end is an enormous hydro-electric dam.

I am glad you are enjoying the journals, and I will pass your kind comments on to the rest of the team. Currently, the expedition is in Malaysia, where Dan is enjoying fishing and going into the rainforest, he is also been extremely well received by the malaysians, who have made every effort to make him feel welcome. Unfortunately, Dan's laptop has broken, so any journals over the next few weeks are going to be a LOT less eloquent, so you will have to put up with that I'm afraid, but we will try our utmost to rectify the problem ASAP.

Many Thanks,

Nick Moylan

Like most everywhere, the people are great. The roads in Canada and the US are not bad. South of the US the roads get worse as one goes south although we have seen a marked improvement in road conditions in Mexico and Guatemala over the years. Mexican toll roads are actually quite good but one pays for that in the tolls. The free (libre) roads can vary significantly from quite good to very busy and choked with truck traffic, topes (speed bumps to control speed) and of course they pass through every town which can be interesting.

Lone Wolf in South East Asia

Hello again everyone!

Finally got some more stuff to update you all. The expedition has now progressed from Malaysia, and driven through Thailand, and is now in Vientiane, Laos. Daniel hopes to drive East into Vietnam, before shipping to Los Angeles. This will be a great privelege for us, as Vietnam has a law that states that only left hand drive vehicles are allowed in the country (precluding cars manufactured for England, but ours is LHD). Daniel is already particularly well travelled in Thailand and Laos, and has been able to travel very easily in these regions.

South East Asia also provides a new climate and terrain, to test the capabilities of our vehicle, the wolf. We have had some minor problems, including the axle snapping once again on the trailer, though we have now replaced the offending component with a much stronger part from a Land Rover axle. We also had a shock absorber mount snap, and this has also been welded back together, though as a precaution, we are flying out a replacement part next week. We also have experienced gearbox fluid coming out of the breather tube, which we have diagnosed as due contamination by water.

Daniel has been extremely well recieved by the Land Rover community in Malaysia and Thailand, and has been made an honourary member of each. And we have a very complete journal entry of the Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia's 10th Anniversary.

I have now added a guestbook to our website, so any visitors may add themselves to the map, and add a comment for the team to read if they wish. Visit our guestbook here. If anyone has any suggestions for our website, other than "Keep the journal up to date" (we know we are a long way behind now) please feel free to e-mail me your comments.

Thanks for reading,

Nick Moylan

Hey JC!

Welcome to Expedition Portal!! I think it was LRM. Also, as you may remember, our fridge in the trailer packed up before the team even left the UK!! We have now just been sponsored by Engel fridges, who have agreed to donate us for a fridge for use in America and Africa... Therefore, if we meet up in Panama, there will be a good flow of COLD beers!!!

Many thanks,

Nick

The Engel website says their fridge is equivalent to 118 375ml cans.... not sure the 5 of us could drink that though.... Really excited about the Americas leg, I finally get to experience all these great adventures I write about. My mum has joined Dan for the next two weeks in Laos, so hopefully when she returns, she will bring back some CDs of photos and videos.

Many Thanks,

Nick
