"nuts"
To borrow an applicable phrase from a wise military commander...
I am awe struck by this thread...Really. What a truely strange world we all live in! A thread started to sell a refrigerator...turned somehow very wrong. Ping-ponged around to all corners of and then a happy ending...sort of.?.
Except that now I want one...LOL!
I do want to make a comment (please excuse me for butting in) about something that was briefly touched on early in the thread. Sorry, I forgot whom the person was that said this and too lazy to look it up. But the gist of the comment I am talking about is where the fact that tese were purchased by our tax dollars and now being sold was found offensive by the writer....Uh, ok? Let me offer this.
As I write this I am in northern Iraq. Its 119*s outside and with the storm blowing in some humidity, the "feels like" temp is about 136ish...Hot. But I am here again doing my job and get to witness first hand how our tax dollars are getting "spent". And since this little gem of the world is slowly coming to somewhat of an end as world and US interests shift I wonder what Mr Poster would think of all this stuff laying around here!?!
Not being very high on the food chain I get a worms eye view of stuff. I see piles of equipment...everything from simple tools or foodstuffs to Vehicles, Generators, and even buildings...all kinds of various things everywhere one could look...Stuff that will, for the most part, likely be turned over to the local military/government. Where I am at I can usually see no less than 8 Quigly 4x4 Vans. What is the costs of one of these back home? 80k?100K?? Even if the USGovernment got a discount...say 60k each...after a few years over here they are past their "prime" and will (just pure guess on my part) likely end up being signed over to the locals...
Now I may be wrong...But do we know that we will be sending a "bill" to these guys? I mean, we have a ginormous debt at home which is in large part due to us being here in the first place...So doesn't it seem normal to have them foot some of the cost? Maybe..maybe not. They say no...ok. So if we think they are not going to reimburse us for our expenses...why, WHY would we leave them MORE stuff???
Cost.
Thats the first thing that comes to mind. The cost of shipping it up and bringing it back home is very high. Then, you have to store it somewhere. More $$. Then, if it is a mechanical object..it likely needs to be used and/or serviced regularly. MORE money...or...
You auction it off to try and recoupe some..any, of the money. So an item...object X, having served its intended purpose for a while and showing some wear (or maybe just being available if needed but still new) is now shipped home, inventoried, and auctioned off. A smart person...with a little motivation and some luck (not to mention some $$) can end up with something they need, cheaper than it would have cost them if they could have afforded it originally, and they keep it from wasting away until it ends up as garbage. Recycling Government junk...sort of. The military doesn't have to continue to maintain it and can get it "off their books". And some folks can obtain them cheaply, use or sell them at their lesiure, and maybe even make a little money.
I don't understand what the problem is.?.
Trust me. The military is a hungry monster. To keep it fed it takes stuff. Wear and tear, be it normal (think milage in a car) or extreme (say an IED blast) take a huge toll on both men and machines. And while there really isn't much market for used, scarred, tired old men (believe me I tried to offer myself... there isn't)...at least this equipment could have some afterlife use to others...?
Would you complain if they took these same brand new refrigerators and crushed them and threw them in the dump? They do that with enough of our stuff as it is...I wish more stuff was available to us via public auction!
ok...I've ranted enough...sorry all!
I'm still interested in one of these if one should pop up in the 750 price range again...Anybody...?
