Wow, Mike! Six Jerry cans!

I was also thinking that I’ll have to extend my super siphon hose no matter where the Jerry cans end up. IF the mount is located at the front of the trailer on the black box the issue there will be the difference between the top of the box and the fuel cover height on the left side of the T4R. I’ll be looking at some pics to eyeball it as Beastie is in LaCombe and I’m recuperating from surgery. But by the looks of it, I won’t have a problem on level ground.View attachment 572902

7 MPG eats up a lot of gas. My mileage got much better to 11 when I got the V8.

My worst mileage so far towing Beastie was 9.9 mpg in the mountains of western WY. Average mpg overall asphalt/dirt combined has been11-12. I’ve regeared to 4.56 and run 255/75R17 (32”) tires. BFG KO2’s. Regearing has made the biggest difference. But wish I had the 5.7 L V8 instead of the 4.0 L V6. Also haveOME medium duty coils and shocks. The T4R is comfortable as a tug. Oh, also went to ceramic brake pads for heat dissipation. One of the few things I would not do again is the rear ladder.

Yes Regearing makes a big difference

Anyone thought about ventilation for the tongue box and fridge therein?
I have as well as insulation on the exposed sides. Another summer project. Plan is an inside and outside locker vent (marine SS) with window netting sandwiched when mounted. Locate behind the tire to protect from road debris. The doors would be another option to install. My batteries are in the trailer so I may not have the heat generated by most trailers. I do want to reduce the heat generated and insulate well the black surfaces on top and front along with something for the doors although they may get more storage instead.

if I had a LC instead of my T4R I’d do just that. And believe me I’ve thought a lot about this.

The big differential for me is cost. I’m retired and can’t really justify spending a lot more money in this. At 71+ y.o., how much time can I really expect to be doing this Into the future? Besides the cost of the fuel tank, there additional suspension modifications, moving the spare tire to a new rear bumper mount, ect. so I’ve decided to go with a simpler, just as effective, and easier solution.

BTW, I just finished reading Dan Grec’s “The Road Chose Me” vol.1. Excellent book. Know what modifications he did to his two door Jeep in preparation for that 40,000+ mile trip from the Arctic Ocean to Ushuaia? He added all terrain tires. That’s it. He used his old backpacking and mountaineering camping gear. at this point in the game Nanc and I require a bit more comfort than that. But the basic premise for use is to keep it as simple as possible.

The trip in the two door jeep was to South America. His Africa trip was in a highly modified jeep Rubicon.

I ran int Dan Grec at the Overland Journal office in Prescott, AZ. This was right before he headed east to ship his Jeep to Europe. I don’t know how much he modified the suspension, but he was being very scrupulous on the final touches to the interior and top. Lisa and Jason were also there after completing their ride through South and Central America. All three are really nice people. I see that those two have switched from dual sports to a Hilux and are off for a trip through Africa too.
Dan’s Jeeps really impressed me with their reliability. The Hilux should serve in the same manner. I believe there will be more parts support for it there.

Nice setup you have.
I’ve been looking at getting my 4Runner regeared, but I’m having a hard time figuring what ratio to go with. Curious if you had to do it over again would you still go 4.56 or would you go 4.88?
Thank you.

If you are not going any bigger than 33” tires I would recommend 4.56. I originally went with them when I was running Cooper ST/Maxx 255/80R17 tires which are 33”. Had too many problems keeping them balanced so went to BFG KO2s at 255/75R17 and 32” which I like a lot better. Both sizes do fine on the T4R, especially for towing Beastie.

I don’t usually carry the spare tire, since my truck has the exact same tire/wheel setup. Do you think locker vents will let road spray in if I install in the doors?

Any ideas on a vent that doesn’t let in road spray? :)
I’m lying in bed with my bad knee elevated so I’m trying to visualize this in my head. How much room is there between the back of the box and the front of the trailer? Can you mount vents there? Desert heat is the issue, right?

Two more days of driving to get my trailer.

Mike, you are driving exactly the rig I would own if I already didn’t have my T4R. I would really love to have that V8 under my hood! Beautiful setup, congratulations! What kind of mileage are you getting?

I have been dreaming about adding a Magneson (TRD) supercharger, but wonder if it would give me the low end grunt I’m looking for. My mechanic is very leery of the heat a supercharger creates in an off road environment.

Is the WiFi extender worth it? I’m installing an Icom IC7100 this spring. I’ll be using a Little Tarheel II for HF. Still trying to figure out where to mount it.
