Well July is here and the Mon is approaching, though it seems like it'll take forever to get here. Since the Portal has been a little slow (well a least it seems that way to me) I reread the thread from last years trip. What a fun thread that was. Topics of great import, ranging from medieval vandals, cannibilism, mutants and morlocks enlightened the Expo populace with our witty and insightful discussion, then probably chased off the majority of people even considering going. But as the great philosopher Popeye said " We am what we am" or something along that lines. So fellow Expo Eastlings let the chatter and anticipation begin.

The Clan is looking forward to Dolly Sods, maybe exploring the Otter Creek Wilderness Area http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/mnf/sp/ottercreek.html, great food cooked over hot coals, meeting up with old friends and making some new ones, and getting out in the woods for no particular reason at all.

I put in my advanced leave notice, so I cant wait either. I have done some new mods to the jeep so the ride up there and on the trails will be more pleasurable. I too want to see the Dolly Sods. I searched for some other places a month back that I wanted to see, but I forgot them now. Thanks for the kick to go searching again.

We might get more people if this was moved to the East coast section...

Considering we're not quite sure if the size of our campsite is adequate, I think we're doing just fine with people. We'll make 'em fit! Clearly, finding a bigger campsite should be the goal of this year's trip. :D

Great post, Mark - and nice map too! Should I bring my kayak?

Aw cool, I hadn't even seen this thread. I'm not sure I can get a bunch of time of, or even the approval of the wife, but my trip to Florida for this weekend was just cancelled, so this might be doable (assuming my jeep is on key!).

I've got a stock cherokee, and it looks like this won't be a hinderance, just curious if this is true? If so, I'm interested in hiking, geocaching, and maybe trying caving again.

TachedOut, maybe we could Caravan up? It's 578 miles for me!

While a 'Yak and Canoe trip should be a priority for a Expo East gathering, I think not in this locale. While I know you have extensive training in swimming pool kayak paddling techniques, I don't think you're quite ready for the Blackwater River. That and I don't really want to haul your mangled body up the side of that mountain, it was hard enough to get myself back up. :shakin:

Well... the Blackwater River isn't quite what I had in mind, but I share your sentiment. Good thinking, Mark. ;)

What??? No guts, No glory! I say we duct tape a can of bud light to your hand and send you down those falls we found on the North Fork:cow:

I am getting excited for this trip too. I'm thinking about bringing my jeep, I'd like to find someone close, maybe in Thomas, were I could park my truck and trailer?

Well it's raining again this morning so I have a little time on my hands.

Heres' a couple of things I dug up. First is a cave closure report for the Mon http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/mnf/rec/cave_closure_release.pdf. Caves included are Hollow, Arbagast, Peacock, Big Springs, Cave Mountain, Two Lick Run due to the white nose syndrome. Don't know if that would affect anyone planning on spelunking but still good to know. Second is that they are having quite a few bear problems in the area due to late frost and all the wet weather hindering early forage for the bears. Especially in the Dolly Sods area. http://www.fs.fed.us.r9/mnf/bear_warning_release.pdf. When we get there the huckleberries will be in full force so I'm sure no bears will be in the area ;) . Instead of bear soup this year, how about some nice fresh bear steaks, with a light coating of olive oil, rubbed with garlic and rosemary and slow cooked over red hot coals. Remember if it tries to eat you, your free to eat it.:campfire: :chowtime:

If we open that gate we can get his jeep to the top and hook the winchline up to his feet. That'll get him back up to the top with less effort on our part and one of us will get to claim that we got to drive his jeep!

Well last year there was the sign warning us about the bears in the area, but since bears can't read, they didn't bother to show up at all and I was a bit disappointed. It'd be really cool if one could just make an appearance for this trip...I know I can run faster than a couple of attendees...well...maybe...I hope...

So what was the weather like for you guys last year?
Too be honest WV and August in the same sentence sends up a little alert in my brain.

Last year the weather was really nice. Other than a heavy rainstorm on Saturday night, which drowned out those "South Park" boys and sent them running for drier ground like a bunch of flighty schoolgirls, the temps where warm but not unpleasant. Of course this year it has been much wetter, but let's hope the atmosphere has dried out by then.
