Totally changed the look of your truck! I'm a fan of the black wheels and actually just redid mine since they got beat up on Coney Flats.

I would use Plasti Dip to paint your rims. Protects, looks good, and if you dont like it, peels off.

So you guys have convinced me. Black rims are the way to go! I may go with Plasti Dip to get an idea on what they look like, but eventually I will do it right. Now my next big question... What do you guys think about the stock steel wheels instead of painting the SV rims I have?!

The SV wheel is a superior piece to the stock steel wheel and center cap. What would be a compelling argument for the switch?

I know where you're coming from. I too thought about going with 5 factory steel wheels, but AFSOC would be right in the fact that your factory alloy is a much better wheel. The steel wheels would look great though...

Steel wheels are heavy, affecting suspension performance, braking and fuel economy and power. Around here at least, they are also crazy expensive. The final blow to steel wheels is that they bend easily when aired down.

but if you bend a steel wheel you can beat it back to shape on the trail. if you brake an alloy wheel you are going home on the spare.

WK,
Excellent thread!
Thanks again for the welcome on my thread, I to have a nissan frontier with a topper/camper shell...The Moose
Wow I am so jealous of you guys out west with all the mountains and beautiful scenery.
Here in Minnesota we have a couple of bumps we call ski hills.

Some things that stood out to me in your thread.
"we decided to have some cigars and camp out in the pasture" ... Awesome !!!
The 2.5 gallon water jug hanging from the tree....homemade shower?
Your ideas for the bed platform.
Patiently waiting for your feedback if you get the DAC tent add on. I am seriously considering one.
And of course all the great pics.

Thanks Carl! Yeah the water jug was a simple shower and wash station, works for us.

Speaking of DAC, just received mine. So far I am very impressed. Well put together, and has reinforced pockets for the corners of the glass tailgate. Can't wait to actually get out and use it. Hopefully it will come in handy during snow shoe season.

Packs up very small also so I can keep it in the truck at all times.

WKexpedition,
Wow, The DAC tent looks like it fits perfect over the back of the topper.
I assuming you got the size for a mid-size truck.
Any feedback on set up and take down?
You most likely know about candle lanterns for taking the edge off the cold when cold weather camping.
I velcro-ed a candle lantern to the roof of my topper on my last outing (I slept solo in the short bed nissan frontier diagonally) (it got down to 45 degrees)and the candle lantern provided some heat prior to falling asleep.
But be careful the hanging chain does get hot.
Here is a link for the candle lantern:

Thanks Carl. It's not as cool as a RTT but it does exactly what I need for a fraction of the price.

Correct this is the mid size model.

Set up is pretty easy once you figure it out. I installed it and uninstalled it a couple times this weekend. Got it down to about 5 minute setup time.

Actually never thought about a candle lantern for a little extra heat. I will have to try it out this winter.

That's pretty neat. I love the under-topper camping setups. One day I'll build a truck with a six foot bed and a topper, then make a super cool sleeping platform setup.

Truck is progressing nicely. Well done.

Decided to take a personal day and get some snow miles in. Decided to go for a hike around the Rollins pass area, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite locations. Amazing scenery and very few people.

After I got back to the truck I decided to break in some new gear I picked up over the holidays. A MSR pocket rocket stove and a GSI minimalist cook set. Made my self a nice cup of tea and took a little nap.
