My Journey

I know it's been mentioned many times, and I also know your response....every time.
There is a book inside you that SHOULD be written. On this site, we get the tiniest speck of the what is there. Look, just look, at those who come here (most of us daily) to see what else you have to share.
The windmill, the fence, I see those pictures and the scribe as art!
You are a blessed man. Thanks again for sharing your minds eye!

Tgil.....thanks. I'd have to settle down to write a book and that just seems unlikely.....

Similar to the ponds shoreline littered with shotgun shells, the fence line here was littered with rifle shells.....

20200209_082512_copy_778x1600.jpg

.....and here too I made the assumption that people came here to kill animals.....there were no signs of target practice of any sort.....

20200209_082614_copy_778x1600.jpg

I believe it was my second night here.....maybe the third. I was out wandering around beyond the wood and wire fences just hoping to catch a glimpse of the pack of coyotes that were barking and howling morning and night.....

20200210_083353_copy_1600x778.jpg

It seems as though this year the coyotes presence has been rare.....I hear them yet rarely see them. Dark fell and just as I turned for camp I saw a silhouette.....it was that rare pack of coyotes. They must have caught my scent as they quickly fled at almost the same time as I caught their silhouette. I have no pictures of this pack.....they obviously were untrusting of man.....

20200210_153534_copy_1600x778.jpg

I continued my walks here but never saw them again. One evening I stumbled across the bodies of four young coyotes.....obviously the victims of some of the rifle shells that I had found.....

20200207_172654_copy_778x1600.jpg

That's a difficult scence for me to come across.....and now I think I understood why this pack was quick to bolt when they knew that man was near.....

20200207_172710_copy_778x1600.jpg

Another night I was wandering around as I always do these days and I spotted a truck parked far off the highway and hidden behind the fence line and my first thought was that this was a man poaching game. I changed direction and right then that truck headed my way. Turns out it was the game warden thinking that I was up to no good. We talked and talked and I told him about the young coyotes that I had found.....

20200209_182434_copy_1600x778.jpg

He wanted to see them for himself so we headed over to what I'll call for no better words.....the killing field. This game warden was a good man that loved animals and saw no sense in killing animals for "fun".....

20200209_182442_copy_778x1600.jpg

He decided to remove their bodies from the desert floor.....maybe to erase the memories from the remaining pack.....I honestly don't know.....

20200209_182456_copy_778x1600.jpg

I believe that was the night of the full moon.....or maybe not.....sometimes I just can't remember stuff.....

Always something interesting, like the game warden and your interaction.

You already have written that book. It’s right here. If you went back and saved every post and dumped it on a laptop or whatever storage option you may have, it would be there if you ever decide you might want to try to get it published. Maybe when (if) you settle down it would be right there.

Back when I first dumped the propane and generator I bought some acreage that had been used to pasture horses and farm prior. I had some chickens and such. A neighbor down the way had a fetish for raising rabbits and letting them go free. Coyote pop went beserk. They started eating pets. My cat, a Shitzu, etc. I had to kill e few to protect my loved ones. Finally got the idiot down the way to quit releasing rabits[ it took the law] and balance returned. I hate killing animals but will.

A few years ago I was hiking back to my rig on a logging road just outside the little community of Clearwater WA. Out of the ditch climbed a little coyote pup crying for dear life. I am sure mom had been killed by somebody down in the community protecting his/her property. Brought tears to my eyes. I will never admit what I did for the rest of the day.

A few decades ago My old Blue Healer and I were hiking a logging road. She had gotten ahead of me out of sight. I came around the corner to see her nose to butt with a coyote. I stood there for a few seconds as the two of them did the dog butt-sniffing dance before the coyote bolted. Truth be told though that Blue healer was the meanest dog I ever want to own.

Greg.....yesterday I had a long and interesting talk with a BLM ranger about the coyotes and I learned a lot about the coyotes and their fight for life.....

Ace.....meeting the Game Warden was an amazing stroke of luck. He told me about a place that he said he knew we would love.....a place where very few come. We've been here for five days now, today will be our sixth, and it's truly a little paradise. We have mountains and valleys, snow covered peaks to marvel at and peaks covered in wonderful wild flowers.....we have rivers and streams crawling with cool, slow moving waters perfect for the dogs to take a swim and fast moving waters just to walk along.....desert cactus, dense brush and towering trees.....we have cliffs and slot canyons, we have miles and miles of dirt and gravel roads to wander on, and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, unforgettable night skies filled with thousands and thousands of stars, and lots of sunshine and blue skies too.....

It's so sad for me to say that Yukons health continues to decilne.....and everyday I can see the changes.....if her life is over soon and I do expect it will end soon....her last days will have been spent in paradise.....we absolutely love it here.....the picture was taken yesterday.....last night was a really, really tough one here in our little paradise.....

JD.....it was so long ago that I read that book that I forget what it was about. Maybe I'll see it in a Goodwill store in my travels. Thanks for the heads up.....

Riversdad.....I understand your point.....you are absolutely correct in my opinion, and I never thought that I'd be the one to hang on too long. Yukon was my first "purchase" after the end of a 30 year failed marriage. She was with me as I traveled down that dark tunnel and she was with me when I saw the light. She was with me when I transitioned from the old life to the new. As a child I don't ever recall dreaming of being a successful businessman but I clearly recall my dreams of living in a log cabin and simply wandering around the world. She has been with me as now I have finally become that full time wanderer that I dreamed to be as a young child.....unfortunately she will never sleep in that log cabin.....but you know, she wiill always be with me.....

Sometimes it's just too difficult to let go.....

Last night was a great night in the camper, and as I type this I hear the the sounds of Yukons soothing snores.....

Most days we get out to explore the nearby rough roads in the Jeep never with any destination in mind. Yukon has the back of the Jeep to herself as I always make Tanner ride up front with me.....he's still a bit of an unknown. I placed a pad in the back with a bunch of blankets on top for Yukon to lie on and she just absolutely loves to get out to explore.....

For me exploration is mostly done with a pair of boots but for Yukon I do what I need to do. The flowers are nearly in full bloom here.....magical comes to my mind.....

And the sunsets every evening are just as magical.....what a lucky man I am.....

That last post was beautifully written but especially your reply to Riversdad. A lot of us have been down that same dark tunnel. Mine was twenty years long but I traveled it with my second dog. She was great comfort during that bumpy ride.

most people who 'write a book' aren't actually the ones writing it.
your thread here and some additional conversation would be enough to compose a few books on your travels & experiences of the 'american scene'

This thread doesn't even cover his adventures in Asia and South America.

Yukon sure looks happy in the photos. I don't know if she ever wanted a cabin. Seems like a happy roadie.

The weather has been unusually nice for the past week although I was thinking that maybe I'm not so qualified to use the word "unusually" in this sentence since.....well, I'm not from around here. Our camp is perched on a mountain overlooking the river and in the distance is a snow covered mountain chain. This week the mountains surrounding us have been turning from a lush, bright green to a wonderful yellow.....quite amazing to watch. Our camp, perched up high, we seem to get a slight breeze throughout the day, the skies are nearly always blue allowing the sun to warm us, and with temperatures in the low 70's.....just about as perfect as perfect can get.....

Just wanted to share a selection of pictures of what we've been seeing and experiencing this past week. And there's more to come.....it's paradise.....
