Terrible about your new friend losing his daughter.
That truck of his is interesting! I see old Chevy, but not positive that is correct?
Went back to look at pics of the truck and noticed the moon in the shot of the steeple. Nice catch!

Chevy or GMC. Looks like the emblem is missing. Just noticed the cataraft. I have one like that and the photo reminds me I’ve got to get it in the water ASAP.

blanketslayer.....I never want to leave and I'm always anxious to return.....that's just how it is.....

Arjan.....yep, lots of good here.....

tgil / Ace.....yes, I recall him saying that it was a Chevy and he put a 350 in it. It sounded really, really good. I met him at the storage units next to the airport which is where he stores all his toys.....sounded like he had quite a few.....And yea, that was odd when I looked up at the half moon and it was perched nearly perfectly on that cross.....

Now that we were back in the city, we needed a place to stay for the night. The first night was once again spent at the free Kiwanis Campground which is on the north side of the airport, but it was packed so we moved on the next day. We stayed a night at the BLM Headquarters, then the next night at the Wildlife Refuge Headquarters, and finally we moved to the south side of the airport and there I found the peace & quiet that we always seek.....

Very little happens at this airport but it was a favorite hangout that is for sure.....the forest service keeps a huge water carrying chopper here.....

20200810_172847_copy_1600x778.jpg

Tanner & I walked all over that airport.....morning, afternoon and night.....here's a few pictures of the chopper resting on the tarmac just as the sun was setting to the west.....

20200810_203059_copy_1600x778.jpg

We met some interesting people during our walks around the airport.....we hung out with the pilot that flys packages out of Lewistown for UPS.....

20200810_174951_copy_1600x778.jpg

And of course Tanner loved him and his twin engine airplane.....and he loved Tanner as well.....the smile & love from a Golden Retriever is welcomed by most all that we meet.....

20200810_175007_copy_1600x3291.jpg

Tanner displayed his airplane ears as best he knew how.....

20200810_175005_copy_1600x3291.jpg

Tanner.....not one to play favorites.....also took the time to check out the UPS truck driver.....and another new friend was made.....

20200810_175156_copy_1600x3291.jpg

Life was much better here on this side of the airport.....all alone.....well, honestly.....it was perfect.....

20200810_203708_copy_1600x778.jpg

The Lewistown, Montana airport is huge when you're talking acreage.....yet it might only have 2 or 3 private flights come & go per day. And this airport is historic.....and I mean really, really historic.....

20200810_172018_copy_1600x778.jpg

This massive hangar I'd guess you would say is the centerpiece.....

20200810_172126_copy_1600x778.jpg

20200810_172239_copy_1600x778.jpg

One day we happened by when those massive doors were open.....

20200811_133355_copy_1200x583.jpg

20200811_133451_copy_1200x2469.jpg

I had been trying my damnest to see inside that hangar so I was thrilled.....

20200811_133346_copy_1200x583.jpg

20200811_133258_copy_1200x253.jpg

Next to the massive hangar was this historic armament storage building.....

20200810_171051_copy_1600x778.jpg

20200810_171124_copy_1600x778.jpg

Now that's just a small preview of this historic airport.....I have more to share (just a warning).....there's a lot to see.....

Loved the sunset pics with the chopper.

So the airport is open to all visitors with no security? What a neat place to hang out. I have a friend with a fueling station at an airport and was able to be there once when a ton of Blackhawks and Chinooks were flying in and out. One of the coolest things I have ever seen.

Lots of old military installations in the west. I remember an article in Montana Magazine (no longer in business) about finding balloon bombs throughout Montana. The Japanese sent tons of these that landed in Montana. Unexploded ordnance. Unfortunately someone picked one up and was blown to pieces. Part of the reason for these was to start forest and grassland fires.

ITTOG.....that's correct. Nobody seemed to care that I was there and I had free access to most everything. I thought I might see a No Trespassing sign but honestly if there was a sign to be found the chances were more likely that it would say Be Alert While Walking On Runway.....

RonMexico.....the airport was a nice change of pace. As you very well know, one of the remarkable things about travel is that you rarely know what will come the following day. It's funny how different two camping spots along the fringes of the airport can be.....the north side pretty much sucked while the south side was.....well.....remarkable.....

JD.....thanks for the link. It reminds me of South Koreans sending ballons over North Korea.....

Since I have such a short attention span anymore I really do like these informative signs.....I literally can read these signs in less than a minute and I can actually learn something new.....It turned it that these signs were everywhere so I'll share a bunch more with you.....

I sure am hoping that there's at least one aviation history buff in the crowd.....if not, at least I'm recording my travels here on XP.....

And here is just a few more.....like I said.....these signs and historic buildings were everywhere.....

20200812_175850_copy_1600x778.jpg

20200812_175252_copy_1600x778.jpg

One afternoon while Tanner & I were out walking we noticed a jet above circling the airport and my immediate thought was that this must be one (or both) of the Wilks brothers.....the 2 billionaire brothers that own nearly 300,000 acres along the fringes of the Big Snowy Mountains. So I decided that we would have a look.....

20200811_103321_copy_1600x778.jpg

I talked with the guy filling the jet with fuel and he said "nope, not theirs". He went on to say that they had a larger jet than this one, and that they no longer land their jet at the Lewistown, Montana airport.....he said that they had completed the construction of their private airstrip.....

20200811_105352_copy_1600x778.jpg

Now Tanner.....he just seems to love all these airplanes and jets.....and so it was that he walked right up that stairway and had a visit with the 2 pilots.....

20200811_105317_copy_1600x3291.jpg

The pilots come from Atlanta, Georgia and spend their days flying wealthy businessman around the country.....this particular jet was available for $5,000 to $7,000 per hour.....just depends.....

20200811_105335_copy_1600x3291.jpg

Tanner truly is my Ambassador to the World.....he opens so many doors for me and I appreciate all he does for me.....whether it's opening those doors, climbing mountains together, or just laying around in the truck camper bed.....

20200811_203301_copy_1600x778.jpg

Sunsets are times to reflect.....three years together.....still on the road.....
