My Focuses have a similar system. I used to struggle with the needle nose pliers, then I bought the simple block that fits on a 3/8" drive. $16 for a cast aluminum block is abusive, and you'd thing it wouldn't work better than pliers, but let me tell you, it's cake when you use this thing.

I struggled for hours with needle nose pliers a few things. Now with the tool, it takes about 1 minute.

If your rear pads were used excessively quickly, and particularly the inside pads, then there are likely a few things that need to be greased. Namely the slide pins, and probably the parking brake mechanism.

I agree w/ the DIY route, you become intimately familiar w/ your vehicles. I never worked on cars until I bought my first Land Rover also just to throw in my .02, I was working in a jag/rover shop in college and someone brought in an Acura that had calipers like that.

Oh yeah... I'm on salary, don't get extra pay if I stay late. So the option of working a few extra hours and paying a mechanic... doesn't work out so well.
