My Focuses have a similar system. I used to struggle with the needle nose pliers, then I bought the simple block that fits on a 3/8" drive. $16 for a cast aluminum block is abusive, and you'd thing it wouldn't work better than pliers, but let me tell you, it's cake when you use this thing.
I struggled for hours with needle nose pliers a few things. Now with the tool, it takes about 1 minute.
If your rear pads were used excessively quickly, and particularly the inside pads, then there are likely a few things that need to be greased. Namely the slide pins, and probably the parking brake mechanism.
