"J.D. Power studies about consumer car preferences are the industry's gold standard. The research firm has released its 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. Jaguar and Land Rover were at the bottom of the list, a severe blow to any high-end luxury brand..........

Didn't Lexus just get #1 in dependability or something? Boy, I wish Land Rover made engines that good. Oh, and remember when Toyota had to recall a bunch of 4Runners and Tacos for rear ends that could grenade? Yeah, those Landie lads could learn a thing or two about designing solid rear axles from Toyota. Maybe if Land Rover had issued more TSBs and done a few recalls on the D5 and Range Rover Sport they would have ranked higher in JD Power's dependability assessment.

Right? My LR4 has actually been more reliable for me than the 5th gen 4Runner it replaced. Also, I saw a guy over in the Land Cruiser forum with a 200 series ''the pinnacle of reliability'' having to replace wheel bearings, axle parts, some suspension bits, and they have to have an engine rebuild (timing belts, etc) every 75,000 miles. And yet people say ''well yes they're super reliable as long as you do all that stuff'' and yet a Land Rover is unreliable for having to get a software update? C'mon...

I’m glad y’all have all had such good Luck with you’re 3 and 4s. Mine has lived in the shop. And it’s received every Service they’re supposed to get at the dealer form New. So I don’t want to here it’s bacuse it was not Maintained properly. It been much Less reliable than both my 97 discoveries and all of my jeeps. There is always something. Every time we go on a long trip I’m worried it’s going to stranded us.

Appears the L860 Defender / Tata Harrier / OMEGA ARC (short for Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture) is getting closer to reality. Basically a Jeep Compass / Mini Countryman Defender as the current Luxury Defender moves even further upmarket with EV options.

Yeah, I'm an owner and I'm active on that forum. You can count on one hand the number of occurrences in the issues as posted. I have one of the earliest deliveries in the US (VIN under 24,000), and I bought an extended warranty expecting typical first-run model year issues, but beyond a couple software based service notices, one preventive campaign for the air suspension fill valve, and replacing the RF module for central locking, mine has been pretty flawless over 34,000 miles - far better than the Subarus and Volvos we used to drive, and mechanically it's been perfect.

The only "chronic" issue right now is on the Td6, the early service due notice that asks for oil changes long before they are actually due - which, when you get down to it, isn't even an issue, as changing the oil early has zero negative impact on vehicle reliability or durability. If you bought the prepaid service plan it's not even a monetary cost issue - it's a time cost if you choose to do it when it thinks it needs an oil change. Otherwise you can do it every 10,000 miles with no problems.

My service advisor remarked that he remembers a time when Land Rovers - specifically the D1 and D2 - would roll off the flatbed at initial delivery with fluid leaks and other issues that would require wrenching just to put them on the lot. He said today it's a software update to catch versions missed while they were on the boat. Software complaints and issues are the single most common reported issue today, and the main reason that JLR has been one of the first automakers to enable SOTA updates for modules beyond infotainment - it now updates its software while I'm sleeping. It was also the most-improved brand in initial quality in 2019, with Jaguar close behind.

Well, that is good news. I watched the release unfold daily, so it probably seemed worse in the moment than in hindsight with the volumes produced showing fewer issues per unit. That is the hazard of a forum - it tends to make you worry more because all you see are problems!
