So - what am I missing here? On page 7 of that PDF (thanks BTW) it lists the following:

4wd Limited with 3.0 liter EcoDiesel

GVWR: 6800 lbs

Curb: 5275 lbs

Payload: 1270 lbs

But the MATH (6800 - 5275) is 1525 lbs? Why is the payload listed as being 1270 lbs instead? 255 lbs difference...

For the Summit model there is a 376 lb difference: (6800 - 5374) = 1426 - 1050 = 376 lbs difference...

I was also surprised to see that the diesel adds 400 lbs to weight compared to the 3.6 liter v-6 gasser!

Humm....

It may be advantageous to you because of your travel--but thats not normal-certainly not for me most of my trips are from 400 to 1200 miles and gas is no problem-

For you and your uses, diesel is no benefit. That's great JIMBO, I wish you many years of happy motoring.

For me and my uses, diesel is a huge benefit.
I don't pretend it's something everyone wants.

I was reading some Aussie Jeep forums last year and they were reporting better mpg's after breaking the engine. One guy said after 12,000 miles he was seeing 25-27 city and 31-34 highway.

Is that taking into account the different volume occupied by an imperial gallon vs a US gallon? 1 imp gal = 1.2 US gal.

Yes, He had taken it into account.

How do we know for sure? For what it's worth I'rather trust this publicly available reports.
Mid 30's is a wishful thinking. Maybe going 55 mph with tail wind on short trip. Real life no.

21-23 lifetime average with high 20s best on hwy is still very good IMHO.
None reported 30's some people have serious miles upward of 100k racked up reporting.

How do we know for sure? Well for starters, You're comparing the old engine to the new one.

As an Aussie I can tell you we never use metric gallons for anything.

The only people that even use the word "gallon" are from pre-metrification days when that was the standard unit, and it was imperial.

If you hear an Aussie say MPG, they are talking about Imperial (American) MPG.

So the JK is 1,000lbs+ lighter which means it should get even better mpg. I'm speaking of course if you were to swap in the 3.0L/8-Speed.

But still used old 5 speed auto. Unfortunately couldn't find much data but there is one from AU http://www.fuelly.com/driver/dj122/grand-cherokee same engine somewhat better economy, no mind blowing numbers though. Pretty much in-line with auto blog report.

The engines are totally different. The transmissions are also very different, not to mention a different body shape. EPA mileage is 28 HWY for the turbodiesel with 4x4, allegedly.

Last link is for 2011 Au GC with 3.0 TD VM Motori engine. Jeep started using those since 2011. 2014 GC it might have been tweaked for emissions or something still it's the same or very very similar engine. 28 MPG makes total sense to me. 34-35 mpg seems very optimistic. In US Gallons!

Diesel adds 400lb to equivalent V6 GC. You would need to adjust accordingly but mpg particularly hwy have a lot more to do with aerodynamics than weight.
