Old Rovers Too Feeble?

So genius. Explain why heavy duty engines use a lot of oil. Since you're so smart and obviously an engineer.

Diesels have increased oil capacity for a couple of reasons.
- One, because diesels are compression fired and produce a lot of heat, of which, the oil will absorb some. Increased capacity allows the oil a chance to cool slightly before being picked back up and circulated. The hotter the oil, the less viscous it is leading to increased wear. Heat is the enemy for oil. It is not designed to be a coolant.
- Two, diesels are dirty and the oil actually absorbs carbon and other deposits that are by products of combustion. Increased oil capacity helps dilute the particles into something that can be managed by the motors oil system. The more oil, the longer the change interval can be which is very important in an HD motor.

Keep the names coming. Its refreshing...ly lame.

Wow exactly what I said. Except for the dirty engine part but that could apply as well. That's right. You're a teacher so you're super intelligent and look down on is that are not "educated" by a liberal college. I will grovel at your feet your highness.

Haha, keep it coming.

The 2F is a diesel? Really? Again, I was unaware of that. I was under the impression that it is, and always has been, a gas motor.

Explain to me why the sky is blue. Why are tomatoes green and then red? If you had to punch Jesus, your Grandma, or your mom in the face, I mean, absolutely HAD TO or they all died, who would you punch in the face?
Ok... Can I use Jesus to control my grandma to use her fist to punch my mom? Is that acceptable? Sorry I'm a few beers in as I write this lol

It was entertaining watching you go into defense mode. Kinda like the other guy bragging about how is 10 spline axles have been so strong and he's carried 100s of thousand of pounds or whatever it is he said and his trusty 10 splines haven't failed him.
Why respond if you're not going to pay attention to what is said and the context in which it is said?

I've been driving Land Rovers almost exclusively for over 35 years. I know what their capabilities are, even with 10 spline axles, so there's no need to brag or be defensive.
Giving an actual example of that capability is not bragging. Bragging would imply that I and my Land Rovers have done things difficult for others to do. I would never make such a claim.

Woah... Hold on now bud. You're barking up the wrong tree now. Mr. Rowe is not someone I would pick an intellectual fight with lol He's always been helpful on here and on many other forums for quite a while.

The most interesting thing about this thread is how a bunch of guys who espouse the "I'm tough and this is what's wrong with society today" mantra are getting all bent out of shape based on one offhanded comment in an internet blog post.

I was just joking about kabobs and stainless steel but then I reread your Colorado on the 4th and well, that was confirmed.

It was one of my first attempts at glamping. Like I said, I usually grab cheap beer and a sandwich. I prefer to relax while everyone else is off playing expedition chef.

I dig high quality stuff, but I agree that stuff is pure excess.

Yeah guys, don't mess with Tom Rowe--i enjoy his contributions--remember you're supposed to be bitching at me.

Not bitching Matt....just friendly poking around the camp fire just like I would do in person if you called a Series Rover "too feeble for modern day exploring".
First I would jump on the feeble thing but actually I would be more interested in this term "modern day exploring".....
What makes today so different from say 1970?

It is just the comparison of going from the Overland Journal LR4 to the Series?
From the Trek Disco to the Series?

What really makes an FJ40 so much better for "modern day exploring" that will help me understand your thoughts?

What I see in your FJ40 is something with no doors, a fabric roof, hardly any storage space, leaf springs, and is pretty heavy compared to other rigs of the same size/vintage.
What I see is someone who will have to deal with dust on the trail, cold in the winter, road noise, rough leaf spring ride and a rig that will welcome regular maintenance (but at least can be worked on easily).

Again what is this "modern day exploring"?

Oh and by the way I can't wait to see your rig in person and I hope you will be running the Sept 7th Overland Journal Trail day.

Go and read Matt's articles. Ask yourself, "Do I really care what this guy thinks about my vehicle?" If he's not man enough to drive them then take that as a complement ;)

It's a realistic view of what we do today.

We all romance the camel trophy, and the trans-Darien expeditions, but the reality is that those days are mostly over.

I wanted something vintage that could keep up with modern society. The Willys couldn't do it, the Series couldn't do it. I daily drove those cars for a year each.

The FJ40 has a much more solid feeling to it. It's much more powerful and it's better built.

I'm not saying you need to drive a specific vehicle to go "overlanding" he'll, drive a Vespa. I did, just get out and see the world.

The FJ just made the most sense for something vintage, I can't afford to keep buying rover parts and upgrading everything.

I guess we think in terms of what we hear you talk about and post about...like the Trek Disco and I think there were some Range Rovers or newer Land Rovers in there. So it makes it seem like you go through more rigs than maybe you really do.

I think I get some of what you are saying...my 70 Burb got new comfy seats right after I got it. A dual battery and ARB fridge went in quick also. And it will be going from drum brakes to disc this winter. Not to mention a diesel engine after that. All upgrades to improve my mileage, comfort and yet keep the shell of the vintage rig that brings a smile to my face.

Either way I give you credit for being a great sport throughout this thread.
