JWEST, Sounds like you've opted to keep the truck (and thus this round of upgrades). Perhaps this is a good opportunity to start a new thread on your truck.

Maybe I'll do a new thread sometime. I added the items here because it's a good thread for some of the cooler things that can be done. I also realize it became a long post so no more on mine here ;)

Any questions should be directed to PM please

For those interested in reading more about the project in a mainstream publication, the LR4 is in the current issue of Autoweek. Autoweek is the primary news source for the North American automotive industry, the print version circulated to 330,000 and the digital/web in the millions. It is interesting to see the rapid growth of interest in these vehicles and topic by the general media.

Low res - sorry.

It is also featured in the table of contents and in four additional pages of editorial. Sinuhe Xavier was the shooter, Ray Hyland the editor. Hopefully this kind of coverage further expands interest in the platform and further support from the aftermarket and Land Rover as a manufacture.

Very cool Scott. Nice shot Sinhue, but of course that is redundant and self evident. If Sinhue posts a shot, it is by definition a nice one :)

10k without a mechanical failure? What about electrical? I would hope that any modern vehicle could make it 10k without breaking down.

Not fully tested, but so far the hot ticket. 1.25" spacers and the factory LR3 18" wheels mount right up. You might need to kiss the calipers with a flapper wheel, but I didn't. I did grind the hell out of one caliper as a test to see if the 18s would fit without the spacers. In the end, it is possible, but I could never recommend or advise it. The spacers really work with this vehicle, especially given how the track width changes on the IFS/IRS with the lift. It looks really good with the tires pushed out a bit on each side, but still aligned with the width of the fender flares.

The 265/70 R18 is a critical part of the system, as the tire is the height I wanted, but still relatively narrow. You end up with a 33x10.5 and a bunch of sidewall and room for deflation, deformation, etc. Just in the little testing I have done on the trail, the truck is transformed. Ride quality is transformed. Traction is transformed. Flotation is transformed. The 20s were just terrible and an embarrassment to such an interesting and well designed chassis. I can now run 18-20 psi and get great deformation on the rocks and flotation in the soft stuff. In fact, the improvement is so dramatic that it shows just how good these trucks are stock, despite the huge wheels and low-profile tires.

Add a few inches of lift, some protection and a 33" tire and you start thinking about doing stupid things with such a nice vehicle. Dusy Ershim anyone? ;)

Hi Scott - Would you still recommend the conversion to 18inch tires even if you can now purchase Cooper LTZ 19in tires? I have a 2011 LR4 with Cooper LTZ 19 in tires and they perform amazingly. I just don't know if the expense of buying 5 18in factory wheels and spacers is worth it.

Also - I understand from the threads that all that you need for the 19in to 18 in conversion is:

* 18in factory wheels
* 1.25 spacers

Can you confirm that this is correct? It is all a bit confusing as you went through several options :)

What about the HVAC on the rear wheel "inner" fenders? I have heard that you need to reroute them or significantly adjust the "inner" fender (sorry - i don't know the right terminology but I hope that you understand what I mean). Finally , can you let me know what brand of the tire you picked?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Best,

Michal

This is the same question I am going through right now. I do light off roading and really not sure which way to go.

Only you can make that decision based on what you can afford, but good tires is the single best modification you can make to the LR3/LR4/RRS platform with regards to off highway travel. If you do NOTHING else (besides saftey and recovery and tire repair gear), get good tires. What LandRover ships these vehicles with is a discredit to the brand.

Also instead of trying to "fit" LR 18" wheels, you could just go with the Compomotive wheels which i believe are the only 18" wheels that will clear the brake calipers.

Hi - thank you for your post! I have 2011 LR4 and heard that even with the Compomotive 18in wheels there are fitting problems (especially with HVAC lines in back wheels' fenders). Is that correct? Did you have to make any alternations to the car to instal the 18in Compomotive wheels? I presume you went with Compomotive PD1880 18in wheels (is that correct designation?) Also which tires did you pick?

Best,

Michal

Oh Nathan, new shoes are a necessity! It's almost criminal that they'd ship with the Contis. At least offer an option for something more capable! I can afford either option, just one leaves more for beer and other toys. The tires are a matter of sufficiency, as in the 19" Zeons being 90+% of an 18s option OR "it's better than nothing, but...."
