Hi - thank you for your post! I have 2011 LR4 and heard that even with the Compomotive 18in wheels there are fitting problems (especially with HVAC lines in back wheels' fenders). Is that correct? Did you have to make any alternations to the car to instal the 18in Compomotive wheels? I presume you went with Compomotive PD1880 18in wheels (is that correct designation?) Also which tires did you pick?

Best,

Michal
I have fitted the Compomotive PD1880 on my D4. No fitting problems at all. I do not know if there are is any difference between a UK to a USA spec. Models, so it is better to contact them before taking my word. They are very helpful and answer back very fast.

There are no problems at all mounting Compomotive PD1880s on the LR4. No spacers are required, the wheels are a perfect hubcentric fit and take the same lugs as the stock rims. Offset is very slightly increased (by 8mm) to clear the front calipers, that's all. Whether your tires will rub in spots depends on the size tires you pick to wrap around those wheels. If you stay within 31.5" in overall diameter on a stock LR4, you won't experience any rubbing at all, or very minimal rubbing under full compression / steering lock, and only when the treads are brand new. For larger tires (over 31.5" in diameter), you may need modifications / lifts - and another place to put the spare, since 32" and larger tires won't fit under the car anymore.

Looking at the whole tire thing too...

I was going to get a set of 2.5" lift Johnson rods and the Compomotive Rims with Firestone Destination AT's in 265/70/18 size (32.61" OD).

Looking to do several mods to my '11 LR4:
Kaymar rear bumper with Jerry can holder and spare holder.
Custom modified rear tow point (I am going to be towing an Eddie Bauer Airstream trailer using a Hensley hitch)
Not sure if I can do an extended aux. fuel tank yet with the rear tow point?
Front bumper with Winch - looking at the Tactical Rovers vs ARB route. May also go minimal with a Devon hidden winch plate and factory front skid plate?
FrontRunner roof rack.
Sill protectors with nerf bars (not sure which ones yet - looking for a type that protects the compressor and tank as well)
Tcase and tranny skid plates.
LightForce running lights

I'm retiring my NAS Defender 90, and still want to have fun with the LR4...

Hi Scott - Would you still recommend the conversion to 18inch tires even if you can now purchase Cooper LTZ 19in tires? I have a 2011 LR4 with Cooper LTZ 19 in tires and they perform amazingly. I just don't know if the expense of buying 5 18in factory wheels and spacers is worth it.

Also - I understand from the threads that all that you need for the 19in to 18 in conversion is:

* 18in factory wheels
* 1.25 spacers

Can you confirm that this is correct? It is all a bit confusing as you went through several options :)

What about the HVAC on the rear wheel "inner" fenders? I have heard that you need to reroute them or significantly adjust the "inner" fender (sorry - i don't know the right terminology but I hope that you understand what I mean). Finally , can you let me know what brand of the tire you picked?

Based on my expectation of vehicle performance, I feel the 18" wheel is the most important modification we have performed to the Land Rover. This is primarily because of the durability of a proper LT tire. We installed a 265/70 R18 Falken AT. This tire is particularly durable, yet still smooth running on the highway.

To install the 18" factory LR3 wheels, all that is required is the 30mm spacers.

The tires I installed are at the limits of size, being essentially 33" diameter. This has required additional trimming and adjustments to the bumpers, fender liner, etc. These tires also eliminate the possibility of chains, unless you run in off-road height.

Realistically, a 265/65 R18 is a better choice. This vehicle is intended for a particular purpose, which does not include more domestic duties.

I think the Compomotive wheels are a good choice as well.

What 30mm wheel spacer manufacturer did you go with? Does it make the tire extend past the wheel arch?

1. Motorsports Technology out of Reno NV

2. No, the tire remains inside the profile of the fender flare. This is also a factor of the narrower tire, a 265mm wide unit. If you install something in the 275 or 285 range, it may stick past.

A hint for our most recent modification - we are pretty excited to say the least

Awesome.

Although I have the locking rear - I would have preferred to get the ARB, then I can lock it whenever I want, not when the computer thinks it should.

Interested to see what the traction system thinks of it. Particularly if you are HD or not, with front air, etc. I'd volunteer to test just a front locker on a HD truck... :)

I do not think the computer will be affected at all. We have installed lockers on other vehicles with traction control, and it never seems to care, particularly since the air lockers are mechanical and do not interface with the factory systems. The vehicle would just see that all is well in the world, each tire spinning at the same rate. If a locker is disengaged, then it would also act normally, although more effectively if only one spinning tire is detected (much like the existing HD package).

It really is a best of both worlds scenario now. Traction control only, rear locker and front traction control or locked front and rear.

^This is what I was thinking. When completely locked T/C should never come on. What I am interested in, is if you are unlocked via the ARB carling switch, but have the HD package and your Rover is trying to lock the rear diff but cannot.

I doubt someone with an HD package LR3/4 would swap the diff out for an Air Locker. You are most certainly correct, I bet the system would be unhappy if it is expecting a factory locker and it is not seeing one or getting the input expected.
