Overland Journal Project Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4)

Not sure if this gets us back on track or takes us farther away, but...

I have been looking for the right place to mount my 2M/70cm antenna on my LR4, and I think Scott Brady's location on the OJ truck works best for me (factoring in total height, ground plane, etc). Question for Scott: what path / grommet did you use to run the coax into the cab?

Thanks very much in advance. I will post up some pics after the project is done.

I'm curious about the ARB front bumper. I want to do an ARB but also wanted to keep the cameras and sensors. We're you able to keep them? I see from the Kaymar site that they have a rear Discovery 4 bumper with the sensor relocation pack, but does ARB have it as well?

Also curious about your Kaymar experience. I want to put a long range tank in my LR4, but also want to put a heavy duty tow point with a permanently attached receiver to increase the tongue weight limit in order to tow a travel trailer. The 550lb limit on the removable receiver just doesn't cut it for me if I want to tow a decently sized airstream plus contents.

Also, what winch did you go with? The Warn 9.5xd or Xp? That bumper looks like it would be a pain to keep the spool neat and tight.

Thanks!

Ah, the bribery story.

So here's a tip—the next time you're checking into a big hotel, Vegas is a great example, when checking in try slipping the person behind the counter a $10 or $20 bill in between your ID and credit card. In doing so, ask if there are any complimentary upgrades. I usually do this when I book a basic room on Expedia for dirty cheap (they do not disclose the rate to the hotel staff.)

I've done it 3 times, it's worked three times. Once prior at Ceasars (Jacuzzi Suite) and twice this trip, initially at Harrahs the first night (penthouse suite, top floor) and at Paris (strip view luxury suite)

But yes, as Scott had previously said, I had the terrible job of hanging out in Las Vegas gambling, drinking, and hunting transient cougar. I highly suggest the Chandelier Bar at The Cosmopolitan and Tao at The Venetian.

Here's some behind the scenes images from LRLV when I wasn't on the strip:

...I really hope people understand the sarcasm

To everyone using spacers.
According to the note that came with the spacers, they are to be mounted on the truck using the same torque than the original wheels which according to LR is anywhere between 90 and 106lbft. The wheels should then be mounted with a torque of 85lbft.
What are you all using? And how often do you check the spacers?

My GG AT2's were bought from Discount. Since I was moving from 20" to 18" I installed the spacers with torque to factory spec, remounted the 20" wheels, drove to the store with 5 18" wheels, they removed the 20" wheels and loaded into cargo, re-torqued spacers, mounted new tires on 18" wheels and torqued to factory spec. So I differ somewhat in that MotorSportTech recommended 85ftlbs but I'm at 98ftlbs for wheel to spacer.

As for re-torque, I did follow the 5 mile after first use, completed by Discount. I have not re-torqued them after probably 500 miles but plan on doing so.

As for the GG AT2's, they are working great in winter weather. Can feel and hear the hybrid design but nothing obnoxious. Running the Load Range E at 40psi front, 45psi rear. Probably will adjust that as the snow melts off the roads and weather warms.

I always use lock tight on wheel spacers as well. Not sure if it helps that much but it makes me feel better and I've never had one loosen up on me (have them on my RRC).

I haven't thought about lock tight but it sounds like a good idea. Might add some when rotating the tires.

The IIDTool saved our bacon this past week, when the production crew went up and down enough times on the suspension (for footage) that it cooked the compressor, causing a fault and sending the truck to the bump stops. We removed the compressor cover and let the unit cool. Then I plugged in the IIDTool and reset the faults, then like a champ, the compressor fired up and boing, the LR4 was back in business and at full height.

We also have an IIDTool for my Range Rover, and we also needed IT this week, because we took the stock tires/wheels from the MKIII just in case we needed them for the LR4 if there was a bag or line failure (the LR4 wont roll on the 33s on the bumpstops). So I installed the 20" wheels and 32" tires (the first set on the LR4) on the Range Rover, plugged in the IIDTool and gave the MKIII a quick 20mm lift - done.

I am sold on these little units now!

Note: GAP is not an advertiser and they did not pay for this endorsement, I just really like the product. ;)
