This sounds like something I need to do.:wings: Hollister Hills is my old stomping grounds, the motorcycle side mostly.
I used to run my '82 Toyota 4x4 out there as well.
I haven't seen the place since I left Santa Cruz in '93.
I'll keep watching this thread as the info comes in.

Wouldn't that be best *after* learning the basics so you had a solid foundation and understanding to build on?

Honestly I don't think so.
1. I don't think off-roader nees basic traing. I mean if you got somebody who has never seen map, gps and has no understanding of coordinate system then yes we've got a problem. Barring aforementioned, 1/2 - 1 hour explanation would be enough (here are the coordinates, that's how you translate them to position on the map, here is map legend, find best route connecting two points). We are not talking navigating with just tripmeter, compass, or sundial and watch or...etc

2. Hopefully out of team of 4 people (people are not venturing out into nowhere along) somebody has descent grasp of navigating.

3. We are not talking crossing Sahara desert or Siberia nor even road-less open BLM lands. In Nevada Trophy one navigates on existing roads and trails that are present on the map or even on average TomTom or Garmin Nuvi.

Good hands-on experience is what you need for building navigation skills. Nevada Trophy is perfect settings for that. If one got common sense that's about enough. I'm sure there dumb people out where capable of getting into all kinds of trouble but somehow I suspect they mostly don't hang out on this site.

May be a little far for you... but... both the Texas Rally and the Arkansas Trophy will include bikes.

I highly recommend you contact the NCLR regarding the Hollister event. We do our Monthly Off Road Gathering (MORG) there and hold a yearly club gathering there as well.

The private area (Area 5, I think?) is not that large if you are thinking about events and camping in the same area. You might want to look into other areas for overflow camping.

Hollister has a new area open too. I believe the NCLR is a sponsor of that area too but I could be wrong.

Hollister is just under 2 hours away from me so I will be there for the day at least and will try to get in some overnight stays.

We had 150 vanagons in the Group 5 area this year with no problems at all. We also had several large motor homes as well. Everyone was off the roadways and there was still plenty of room. We don't use that area for any driving events, that is what the rest of the park is for. For Syncro de Mayo we have used the new obstacle course the last 2 years for the syncro rally. We set up a course with PCV pipe gates with ping pong balls on strings mounted on top of them that have to be navigated through. Touching poles adds points and the lowest score wins. We make sure to add lots of spots that require diff locks to be used etc. This is an easy game when everyone has the same sized vehicle but when that is not the case the narrower vehicles will have a large advantage.

Area 5 had a nice outdoor stage, decent outdoor kitchen and nice camping. I think it will work out great.
