Packing Heat...who does it?

I'm all in favor of packing heat. I like the ones with adhesive backing that stick to the top of your socks, otherwise after a while they wind up under your toes and kinda hurt. I also stick one in each glove. I don't have much trouble with my hands but my feet get cold.

What? Not that kind of heat?

Oh. Nevermind.:)

Like anyplace, you will find in Texas what you expect to find. If you come here looking to find a place full of the greatest people you could hope to find - that's what you'll find here. If you come expecting people who are always looking for trouble - well, you'll find plenty of them as well. I came back after being away almost 20 years hoping to find the former - and I have not been disappointed.

It's great to be back in The Lone Star State.
Come visit! We'd be glad to have you.

Good to know if I ever travel in Texas. Always bring an armored vehicle and keep someone in the top turret at all times.

Sounds like a friendly place.

On topic edit - gun owner, not gun carrier. Never felt a need. Except one time in Wilmington, DE downtown at like 2 in the morning. But I guess I survived OK without it...

Used to carry, now I don't. I work everyday with violent people, people considered the dregs of society. I think TerriAnn hit the nail on the head with the idea that respect begets respect. If it doesn't, then it was just your time to go, gun carrying or not.

What if this thread were titled "How many of you carry a winch?" would we have all the heated debate?

I carry a winch ... but its not loaded.

GRwinch98.JPEG

Mercury winch circa early 1960's
It has never been stalled in a single pull.

Unfortunately I had the drum brake rebuilt and the machinist located a key way (I think) wrong so the brake only assembles backwards. The drum locks when spooling out and free spools when winching in. :(

So far I have not found anyone who will (can?) fix it. Fully loaded, the drum carries 125 feet of 3/8ths cable. The motor is WWII aircraft surplus (B-17 landing gear motor I've been told). With no electricity you can manually crank the winch.

What if this thread were titled "How many of you carry a winch?" would we have all the heated debate? It is only an inanimate object. Just as Larry The Cable Guy Says "If guns kill people, then I can blame my pencil for misspelled words." Fourty years ago this would not have been a political discussion, it would have been an equipment discussion.

Is a winch not like a gun? Could they both be defined as a tool needed to get you out of a last resort situation?

The decision to use a winch/gun is a personal decision based on the persons perception of need for such a tool.
...

sorry Mike,
A gun can be used to threaten other people, a gun is intended to use to threaten other people, when carried in public.
A gun can lead to escalation, as mentioned many times in this thread.

It can be used in self defence against wild animals or for hunting but this is not what the discussion is about. Neiter sport shooting.

And a guy who is not aware of the aura created by carrying a gun shold not do so!

A winch doesn´t have these implication.

"40years ago this discussion would have been in the equipment corner"...yes 40years ago !
Sorry to hear so many of the travellers think gun carrying is normal and neccessary. Or is it just forum members living and wheeling in Texas or the Sierra Madre ?

I ran into armed groups quite some times while travelling in the sahara or even in the woods of Berkshire MA, a gun wouldn´t have helped but would have led to escalation.
We have been assaulted once in France waiting for the ferry to Tunis, beeing so angry that if I had a gun, violence would have increased or I might even have shot the next guy just looking at our car, not wanting to rob us...

So I prefer precaution (we are not travelling into war-areas, we don´t sleep in touristic / transit areas in the car any more, I always park the car with key ready to turn and to race of..) but the only weapon we carry along is pepper-spray and a big mag-light and our tongue...

Soenke,

The statements above are an awful broad generalization. Growing up in AZ, it was not uncommon to see hip holsters, and gun racks in trucks. I can remember carrying(and knowing how to shoot) when I was as young as 9 years old. Mind you, I had the very close eye of my father on me, but the gun was far from being used in a threatening manner.

You need to evaluate each situation individually, rather than make blanket statements. Gun or no gun, escalation can happen. Remember back to Terri's comments about dogs, yards and exposure...the same is true for exposure to guns and the folks that carry.

It can be used in self defence against wild animals or for hunting but this is not what the discussion is about. Neiter sport shooting.

And a guy who is not aware of the aura created by carrying a gun shold not do so!

Catering to the a lower common denominator, lowering the bar, and the giving the impetus to a scared or undeducated group does neither side well.

A winch doesn´t have these implication.

Without disrespect, it sounds as though you owne reservations about your ability to handle anger and violence, with or without a gun, may be clouding your judgement. You had numerous pieces of equipment on the vehicle that could have been used as a bludgeon, but you didnt club the next guy...why would you think that if you had a gun, you would have shot the next guy?

So I prefer precaution (we are not travelling into war-areas, we don´t sleep in touristic / transit areas in the car any more, I always park the car with key ready to turn and to race of..) but the only weapon we carry along is pepper-spray and a big mag-light and our tongue...

Condition Yellow isnt just for being armed. Smart decisions and planning play an important roll, and are an important tool in avoiding conflict; a gun is just another tool in the bag. Your brain is the deciding factor.

Oh to see the world through other's eyes. I think the biggest problem with this board is most people tend to see others as they see themselves. You would feel the need to cause others harm if you had a gun so you naturally ascribe that tendency to those who do. This is where the problem arises. The people that do carry guns would never think to possibly shoot someone for looking at their car no matter their level of anger. They see that as irrational. Hence the disconnect.

I tend to think other people here think like I do due to a commonality of interest. It rocks my little world when I find out this is not the case. I would never dream of telling someone what they can and can't do, so naturally I ascribe that trait to others. I see now that is just as irrational as wanting to shoot someone for looking at one's car.

There has got to be more to your story than this outburst quoted above.
Pro-gun folks are not your enemies despite whatever bad experiences you may have previously had.

Dude...... get out your easy chair and chill with your favorite drink.
