Phil's Adventure Tacoma

Phil,
Would you do me a favor and post a pic of the CBI rear bumper from the side of the pivot? I'm toying the idea of getting a aux tank so I need to move the spare tire to the back. My camper stick out pass the edge of truck bed and I'm not sure the pivot will clear it.

Thanks!
Alex

Here you go. I think this is what you wanted. If its not, I have a bunch more for you if needed.

Well we are back from our Death Valley trip. This was the trucks first long trip. All in all it held up great.

The main problem came from the rack. I installed the rack right with the exception of two screws that we fixed the first day. I did not overload the rack either. No matter what I did though it would not stay in place and the tracker foot even popped out of the track.

I am currently writing a letter to Thule as this is unexceptable.

:Wow1:

I just bought a new set of rails and feet to mount my Yakima crossbars from my old truck. Before, I had it through bolted on the topper, but I got the rails this time thinking it would be better distributed. But you're right, all there is holding it on are the those little clips that slide into the track. Maybe I should rethink my mounting and go back to the old style. Have you had the same problem when your yaks are up there? Thanks for the heads up on your experience with the tracks.

This was the first problem I have had. The tracks gave due to the fact that the mounting hardware for the basket would not tighten or stay in place as it should have. The shifting weight caused too much stress on the feet packs which caused one of them to pull out.

Phil,
Just a thought.
The truck bed maybe flexing cause the camper shell to flex with the truck bed. The Thule feet with the load bar and basket attached may not be fixable enough to follow the camper shell and that's why it pops out of the track.
BTW, your truck looks really nice!

Funny, I was just thinking that too. Over the next week I am going to be testing the whole rack set up and see what happens. I want to see what exactly casued this to happen.

Thanks for the complements:exclaim:

I have had 2 Thule racks and neither had problems. I think that you guys are on par with the flex idea and i really dont know if there is a remedy. However; i dont know how much the bed will actually flex. You may need to put really squishy bushings uner the bed to help absorb some of the articulation. I dont know that it is Thule's fault, they make really quality stuff. The track feet i have had a little bit of trouble with once because i tried to pull my truck into the garage and it hit the house. My bad, truck was too tall. BUT, there may be another solution, have you tried the clamp feet? they are single position. You bolt the attaching points to whatever, then make set the feet on and they clamp in. Really reliable, had one pop off but no damage, just clipped right back in.

Oh I know Thule makes quality products. I have installed dozen's of Thule and Yakima racks of all sorts. This is the first issue I have ever had with one. I have plenty of free time tomorrow so I will try to pinpoint the exact cause of the issue and go from there. I should be able to figure out why this happened.

I will post up what I find out tomorrow.
