G'day all,

am about to purchase a Toyota Hilux (similar to the tacoma) and have decided to go a 3" lift. My query is that I am yet to decide whether to put 255/85x16's on the 16x8 rims or go 285/75x16 on the same rims.

Im leaning more towards the 255's as in practicality. With the 285's I know I'll need to modify the inner guards abit to accomadate the extra width.

Could you guys please post some pics of your trucks with the 255's so I may see what they look like? and others too.

I will be mainly using my truck for camping, hunting, etc and the occasional firewood run.

Terrain will vary from thick sloshy mud, to hilly terrain with some rock and gravel.

thankyou in advance

:)

P.S By the way, Im planning on going the Maxxis Bighorns for both sizes. any review on these?

Thanks for the responses guys. it is appreciated. Just a quick question for you all - do any of you have driveshaft issues with the CV angles using a 3" lift?

Also, how much worse is braking performance with the 255's over stock?

We here in Australia have really tight ******** road regulations and it looks like I will need an auto engineer to inspect the 3" lift and 255's if I got ahead with it which would be another 650 - 1300 dollars depending on how tight they want to be?

Over here anything over 2" of lift need engineering and having 265's is usually OK but in the case of an accident, they could shaft you for it if they wanted too.

Gimme the Yank road regulations any day.

keep the pics coming guys, really nice trucks you got there :)

What year is your Hilux? Based on your 3.4 engine, I'm assuming it's a 2005 or older? If that's the case, your body is similiar to our Tacomas, but the suspension is entirely different. You would have the same suspension as our 1994 and older IFS 4x4 trucks.

There's no major rear driveline issues with 3 inches of lift. The spline count can handle the extension. If you have a CV on one end and a U-joint on the other, you might get some vibrations depending on the angle of your diff, which can be changed and corrected via shims. Same thing with two U-joints, but the angles have to be different than with a CV.

If you have a two piece driveshaft, such as we have on our extra cabs or long beds, there can be more issues, since the rear piece comes down at a steeper angle and can be thrown off more with lift. A custom long one piece would go a long way to making the angles much better.

It may be fine stock, but as I recall, on my 1989 truck, I needed some shims to keep it from vibrating at 3 inches, but mine was a short bed, one piece driveshaft. It came stock with 2 U-joints, but I eventually put a CV on there when I went higher in lift and it worked better.

The front shaft should haven't moved at all, unless you dropped the diff in conjunction with the lift and even then it should be OK.

By the way, lots of nice Tacos in this thread! I really wish I had a roof top tent now for my 80.

That's much bigger than a 285. Looks like a 35" or maybe even a 37" Mickey Thompson MTZ, or similar knockoff. And a Bentup front bumper too. Man, those look good on Tacomas.....

Sweet shots of the Hilux, Max!
