Project "Oscar" 5spd D1

So some of you may remember my 98 d1, as seen here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52349

Well, I don't want to say that I'm giving up on the 98, but I have to partially feel like I am.

Long story short I found this:

2zoj4fp.jpg

A 95 5spd D1 with 128K on the clock. In Coniston green no less. Well needless to say I had to have it. I still have the 98 but probably not for long...it's getting sold soon most likely. For some reason I didn't have my heart in it and I have to think it's because it was an automatic. I know it sounds crazy but of the many vehicles I've owned, this is only the 2nd automatic transmission I've had. And I don't have anything against them at all...I just love driving a manual. It feels right, philosophical differences aside.

Anyway, the plan is to take the ARB, winch, suspension, and tires/wheels off the 98 and put them on the 95. 95 will be donating it's stock gear to the 98 so it can be squared away and sold.

I suppose you might also be wondering about the "oscar" in the title....well, my two scouts (which I have a deep affection for) were inadvertently named after children's show characters. The first was a my scout II that was painted a purple color that earned it the nickname "Barney" by some friends. The second is my traveler which being blue with a white top looked way too much like a smurf to avoid being named "Smurf".

That leads us to this Disco. I think the name is obvious now...since it's a Land Rover I'm sure its going to be "grouchy". Hopefully not too much though. As you can tell the 98 D1 didn't get a name...maybe that's how I know it wasn't meant to last. :ylsmoke:

Expect more out of this thread than the last...

Almost forgot...don't get used to the faded paint.

Here's a family pic from tonight. As you can (sort of) see, I did some buffing today. I will take better pics after the wax job. I just couldn't let that beautiful green stay faded.

too funny- I have never named my trucks, and the kids are pushing to name the 5 spd D-I and D-II 5 spd, and I feel your pain re:manual. The 5 spds are a whole different animal, and in a very good way.

That's kinda funny because I don't have really much love for my 5spd disco but I have all sorts of love for my Automatic disco. I guess I am just lazy like that.

I'm with Timmy.

Though I suppose it's what you're used to as much as anything.

I've been driving the '94 automatic since new....I'd rather drive it than youngest son's 5-speed.

Wow that was quick-you raced through the build and now it's out. Nice looking 5sp-I always liked the coniston green as well. When I lived in SC there was a coniston green with limestone white roof DI in town that was used by an enginnering company for commercial construction, etc. That looked really nice and unique. I've named the cars I really liked in the past, so far the IIa hasn't been officially named but I'm sure one will come along. For some reason the sailors tradition of naming it something female for good luck seems appropriate and it's blue so maybe Beatrix but I'm not sure. The DI is currently Kifaru which is Rhino in Swahili as it hulks about slow but steady.

Weird thing is, I didn't ever have a thing for naming my vehicles. But other people started referring to them as such and they stuck. I will take the blame on this one though...I figured might as well keep it rolling.

Looking good Jordan!

Thanks buddy.

Yeah, I guess it's just personal preference. When it comes to my off-road trucks and sports cars, if it wasn't a manual it didn't feel right.

Well, it wasn't REALLY a build...since I bought it like that. But I put a bunch of new parts on it. Fixed some major issues and got it driveable. I will miss it...but I LOVE the 5spd.

I'm a bit partial to 5-speeds as well, but it can be nice having an auto on a steep hill with traction control without having to worry about the clutch/ebrake.

I drove a 5-speed disco I and it sure felt a lot stronger than the Disco autos. It actually woke the truck up and didn't feel like a dog.

Pics of the clean-up job please... Lets see the shine!

You are right about the steep hill issue...but out of the 14 vehicles I've had only 2 have been autos. And I'm from the highlands of NC...so driving a manual on steep hills doesn't really bother me :p

The 5spd definitely feels a lot stronger than the auto. I assume it's simply the gearing.

Pics will be coming...but I've only buffed a portion of the green d1. Still gotta finish and put some wax on. The weather here has been crappy and I keep getting sidetracked on other things. Between the two disco's there's a lot to do to get everything switched over/buttoned up.

ARB has been removed from the 98...now just gotta get it on the 95. That's just the tip of the iceberg as far as stuff I gotta get done.

Ordering a ton of parts for the 95 tomorrow. On my way to the shop now to do the fuel filter.

I wonder if it will pull itself along in 4lo-locked and 1st gear on the trail? I guess we'll have to wait until the Uwharrie Safari to find out.

Odds are the R380 has ATF in it. That should be drained and the gearbox refilled with Redline MTL. Filler plug is a #55 Torx if it hasn't been swapped to a square head plug.
