Seattle to Death Valley

Saturday, Nov 15. Last day of the workshop. It was actually only a half day. We went back to the dunes, from a new direction this time. We came in from the east side, and walked across the flats, instead of up and over all the little dunes coming from the southeast. We walked in the dark, and were on post before sunrise. There were only 4 of us this morning. Those that didn't leave already, slept in this morning.

I was not excited about going back to the dunes, as this was the 3rd time in a week. There is plenty of variety, and never the same perspective; so it turned out OK.

Before Sunrise:

Here comes the sun:

Finally it was time to head back, and finish up the last slideshow for the workshop.

Later on Saturday, Cindy & I took one of our new friends out to see Grotto Canyon, and get a overall view of the dunes, from the south.

Grotto Canyon is closed to vehicle travel, about 100 yards from the 1st waterfall. So we parked, and walked.

The canyon makes a sharp left turn, and runs right into the "Grotto".

Sometimes it helps to do a little climbing.

When you drive back out of the canyon, you can see down onto the dunes, from a high vantage point.

The sun will rise from your right, and set to your left. This makes for great detail in the dune structures. The smaller dunes stack up like waves of water.

After the sun dips below the horizon, the hot-pink sky is the light source for the next few minutes.

The next morning, Cindy & I packed up our gear, had breakfast at Furnace Creek Ranch, drove through the Artists Pallet, and headed for Lone Pine.

Yellow Rhino,
Thanks for the kind words, and WELCOME to the Expedition Portal:smiley_drive:

I do need to prep the rest of the trip photos and get them in here. I still have Mono Lake and the Bodie ghost town.

Edit: The trip photos start up again in post #53. Mono Lake & Bodie Ghost Town.

Gorgeous shots! I really want to make it down there this spring to shoot some photography.

I'm hoping to take a two weeks or so off to drive down 101 along the coast, over to death valley, then up to Yosemite, and maybe crater lake.

These shots really inspired me! :)

Thanks.
I still have to finish up with Mono Lake, the Bodie ghost town, and the trip back to Seattle area. Sorry for the delays on this last leg of the trip.:)

Wow your shots are amazing. Really makes me want to look at my own photography with a little more technical out look. Impressive.
