Should I ditch the auto hubs for manual?

The last two or three 4x4's I've owned had automatic hubs and I never really had any problems with them. Is there any pressing reason to swap out the auto hubs on my Raider for manual ones? Are they weaker? Are they less likely to engage when I need them? Are they more likely to not disengage when I need them to?

DO IT. It puts less wear on the front drivetrain and since there is less resistance it should allow better fuel mileage. I did mine a few days ago and I feel I did the best thing. I am sure a few other people will chime in with some more useful information.

The Gen I mitsu auto-hubs do not stay engaged like the Gen II drive flanges, when in proper working order. I don't think they are necessarily 'bad' but the manual hubs are generally preferred. Paul (plh) is selling new Chinese knock off Aisin hubs. You can locate factory Aisin hubs from time to time in wrecking yards, or Superlift units pop up occasionally.

PM me and we can make a deal for some Superwinch hubs, or I can send some spare Auto Hubs for you.

Sounds to me like I don't really have a reason to switch, unless I were to get an old pair of auto hubs and weld them solid into just flanges. Those might work for my long trips off road but it seems like it would be better just to leave them as is and carry a spare.

What does the board say? when I'm off roading and in 4wd for days at a time am I going to have trouble?

You shouldn't, but I carry a set of the original hubs with me just in case there is a failure. They a very simple to install on the trail.

If you're going to attempt welding the auto hubs, you should just switch to the Gen II flanges...easier and probably tougher. Just a thought.
