Uzbekistan Continued...

From Uzbekistan we entered Tajikistan and after servicing the Land Rover in Dushanbe headed off to the Pamirs on the Pamir Highway. As we are early in the year we had a lot of rain which made for some bigger than expected river crossings, negotiating landslides and snow on high mountain passes. We made it to Khorog after 3 days.

It was in Khorog we got our Visas for Afghanistan and obtained some local advice on the security situation in the Wakhan Valley. Unfortunately for us we were not told about a 'special' vehicle document which is required to take your vehicle into the country that you CANNOT obtain at the border. Having been stamped out of Tajikistan we could not go back to Khorog to get this document (which cost $200) so we were stuck. We managed to leave the Land Rover in Tajikistan and go in on foot but I wasn't too happy with where it was left so we came out the next day after a brief look around to continue our overland journey.

I am bitterly disappointed that I could not drive my Land Rover in Afghanistan because we will likely never repeat this journey in a 4x4. It was our only chance and it did not happen. Nowhere have I read or been told about this document before so maybe it was something newly introduced.

Anyway, onwards and upwards to Mongolia and Siberia!

Kumchatka looks amazing, That must have been a sight from the sea

That is all from Tajikistan. Currently in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek with a pretty empty road ahead through Kazakhstan, the Russian Altai and Mongolia.
