Right on, and the advice applies to 2004 and older LR's in general

I think LR Maxx's advice rings true on most LR's from 2004 and older, at least my two DII's.

Had a damn four way flasher gremlin just yesteray morning.

I wouldnt have it any other way.

Thanks All, great responses! I may check out that Series IIa I linked in the first post, I am a bit curious to see for myself just how anemic these engines are :) Bear in mind, this would still mainly be a weekend getaway (slow getaway at that) vehicle with the occasional commute thrown in (surface streets, 5 miles, max speed 35-40 mph). If the diesel really is that slow, I'll start looking at the petrol option. I will have to expand my search area regardless, so far I have seen very few for sale in the Western states (will definitely check in with Pangolin and Lamorna though as my search takes more shape).

Thanks again!

My 1966 Series IIA 109 diesel wagon would max out at about 67 mph but was much more comfortable between 50 and 57 mph.
I did balance the engine when I rebuilt it at about the 200,000 mile mark but it now has over 375,000 miles on it and was getting pretty tired and smoky when the gearbox self destructed (again).
I never had an issue with keeping up with traffic on anything other than an interstate in the over 200,000 miles I have put on it since 1978. I could maintain 60 on the highway everywhere except steep grades and used it as a daily driver for over fifteen years.

When I finally get around to yanking out the gearbox (again) I'll probably have to replace the engine since its at the maximum bore size now - I guess I could sleeve the bores but its only a 3-main bearing engine.

I'd like to replace the 2.25 with a 5 main bearing 2.5 NA engine or maybe a Tdi - its resting awaiting its turn among my long list of projects that I will tackle after my retirement early next year.

I've had at least one Series truck in the driveway since 1972 - I can't imagine ever not owning one (or two)

Not sure if I should post this yet or not, but what the heck!!

I am retrieving a basket case 88" this w/e I already purchased- had to finish a project here first to get enough room for all the parts. Point being, it is a '70 late II-a w/ only 33k miles from NC. Here is the best part- it threw a rod, and the motor was toast. So, the owner decided to restore it, and disassembled and walnut shell blasted the frame and bulkhead, then had them powder coated!! They look brand new, and the VIN is like reading it off a new truck.
It will take a little time to get it sorted and built, but didn't know if it would be of interest to you. If you are looking for a keeper, this is the ticket!! I have also found and secured a 109 donor with a supposed good engine- or I have a very nice 200 Tdi drivetrain…

Anyway, not trying to hijack or advertise, but simply provide an option if you are so inclined. PM if interested.

I will add that I simply find SWB trucks too small - even when traveling alone. While I appreciate the smaller turning radius, I'd never trade this for the space in my 109. It's not just interior space, but also front seat legroom as well.

No 88's for me.

Really???

Sorry, always looking for parts.

As for my 109, On Wednesday I put about 75 miles on my rover. Driving to work (far away) then errands elsewhere (far away) then back home. On one 5 mile stretch, I received 4 thumbs up. Also received one from a tow truck driver leaving the office. Lastly on my way home, I saw three people stop to watch me drive by.

They talk about the Defender and how the next one has to be appealing. Really, you gotta look at the truck and instantly see yourself crossing Africa.

BTW I'm 5' 10", average build (with optional spare tire). I'm on the upper end of being comfortable in that truck. If you are much larger than I, you are gonna be cramped.

88s are awesome for around town.

I'm 6'0" and around 225 - I've evolved over the years to perfectly fit a Series truck (been driving them since 1971) - My legs are a bit short for my height and I'm perfectly comfortable behind the wheel - an inseam longer than about 32" may have an issue in an 88.

Not many usable bits on this old girl, other than a Capstin winch ;-) and the hopefully good engine, but let me know if you need something specific.

Thanks all, again, for the great feedback! Due to circumstances I have been unable to take the IIa out for a spin but am still in contact with the seller and may go for it. I think the idea of a (mechanical) basket case project appeals more to me however, but we'll see! I do appreciate all your thoughts, it is a big help and will probably be for other people looking at older Series as well :)
