. . .this weekend I covered over 550 miles with only the most vague plan and much of it near the az-mex border...she could just watch the track and get the ok messages (sent w/ each meal just to make a good habit)...
What I love about the SPOT concept is this simple-n-fast method to just send a quick "Everything's fine" message and coordinates. It's a one way communication method (if I read correctly), so it doesn't intrude the way an incoming phone call or text message does. But I'm kind of protective of my campfire time as sacred.

I'd like to see your route, Lance.

Cheers

The other use I have found is it works as a low budget low jack. I have a little lockable compartment on my moto and I turn it on when I leave and forget about it until I return.

Another use, a friend of mind has found is to velcro his SPOT to the underneath of his kids Scion's bumper and know where he has been and the time. It gives dad peace of mind knowing his kids did and was where he/she claimed.
Interesting that your SPOT works inside your bike's storage compartment and under your buddy's bumper. Mt SPOT (along with all my other GPS/SAT devices) only seems to work with a clear view of the sky.

Anybody else getting a good signal when the SPOT is "hidden"?
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I'm thinking of getting one and am curious of the post above as well. Also I heard they do not work very well if you use the belt clip and carry them verticle. They work better if held horizontal. Is this true? Also any one use one in wooded areas and have any connections issues?

I've also had issues with my spot getting a good signal to the sat. Those of you using them in vehicles, where are you mounting them?

It's let me down a couple of times when activated while moving in the woods. I'll try the holding it flat method, I guess. I wish the light went from green to another color after a message went through. Sitting there waiting for the 5 second green light can be tedious.

Mine just sits on the dash board. If you need to you can use velcro to keep it in place. I've never ever had a problem with it in the SoCal sun.

Usually once at the destination, i'll send the ok and place it on the hood. I'll come back after i setup camp and the signal will be sent. Then i'll shut it down for the night and toss it back in the rig. The next morning i'll fire it back up again and toss it on the dash. It wedges itself perfectly.

Another Kudo's for the SPOT messenger, and a cool company too! We recently had an Off Road Open house event, and I called them up just a couple of days before the event, and said, "Hey, do you have any promotional table top displays I can set up?" And they FedEx'd me a bunch of flyers, a display stand, stickers and other stuff, including a static (dummy) unit for fondling, and something for a raffle too!

FWIW, my SPOT worked flawlessly all across Utah. I was really impressed how fast it would sync with a satelight after initally turning it on.

The Spot honeymoon is over for me. Mine has failed to send a message at least a dozen times. I still carry it. I just don't think of it with the same feeling of security I felt the first time I used it.

Maybe the real trick is to push the buttons repeatedly until it bursts into flames so you can send smoke signals.

So can you tell when you send a message if it goes through or not? I'd hate to think I've sent a message only to find out later that it did not go through.
