There is no question that Oshkosh developed the L-ATV, in part, to meet the requirements of the U.S. Military's JLTV program. So what is the JLTV?

Now there is no question that Oshkosh sank a great deal of its own development money into the L-ATV, primarily with a view to winning the JLTV contract. But it's also worth noting that Oshkosh seems to have much broader plans for the L-ATV.

6. The Oshkosh L-ATV diesel-electric serial hybrid, in Baja 1000

Next, this is a collection of images of the L-ATV diesel-electric hybrid prototypes that participated in the Baja 1000.

Although the JLTV procurement program does not specify hybrid capability, nonetheless Oshkosh has been developing a "Propulse" diesel-electric version of its L-ATV. As near as I can tell, Oshkosh is the only current contender for the JLTV procurement program that is doing so. AM General and Lockheed Martin do not seem to be developing equivalent hybrid versions of their JLTV proposals. But again, Oshkosh seems to be committed to L-ATV development independent of whether or not it wins the JLTV competition, because Oshkosh has also been marketing the L-ATV for export. And in the export market in particular, it seems that diesel-electric hybrid versions of the L-ATV might find some interested middle-eastern buyers.

Notice, for instance, how the L-ATV as advertised in the more specific JLTV program brochure shown in post #1202 above, does not mention diesel-eletctric hybrid as a drive-train option. Whereas the more general L-ATV brochure shown in post #1205 above, does mention a "ProPulse" as a possible drive-train option:

This serial-hybrid L-ATV has a 400hp 6.6L Duramax engine built by Gale Banks Engineering – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gale_Banks_Engineering , http://www.bankspower.com/galesinsi...l-Army-Goes-Behind-The-Scenes-With-Gale-Banks , http://www.duramaxdiesels.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27943 . This drives a generator that seems to produce 70 KW of exportable power; but I cannot seem to find a reference for its total power output.

7. The Baja 1000

Here are some images of the 2011 Baja 1000 race course, which ran transversally in a loop across some of the most mountainous terrain at the northern end of the peninsula:

The Baja 1000 course varies in alternate years. In 2013 it was roughly similar to 2011:

But in even years the Baja 1000 runs the full length of the peninsula, down to La Paz. For instance, in 2012:

The race down to La Paz is called the "Penninsula Race", while the race at the northern end of the peninsula is called the "Loop Race". The Loop Race is by far the most challenging of the two, whereas the Penninsula Race has lots of long, straight runs. Either way, the race is 1000 miles, non-stop. It is not a "rally race" with stages, but rather, a non-stop continuous run.

So in 2011, Oshkosh ran its two diesel-electric hybrid L-ATV prototypes in the Loop Race....:sombrero:

8. Relevant TerraLiner Precedents

Now again, I addressed the Oshkosh HEMMT, MTVR, and the L-ATV that participated in Baja 1000 at considerable length, because as near as I can tell Oshkosh really has developed the kind of E-motor serial hybrid solution that comes closest to meeting TerraLiner requirements. Sure, as thjakits repeatedly reminds us, the Oshkosh Propulse drivetrain is definitely not a perfect fit. But Propulse is at least "relevant". And much more relevant than armchair speculation about this, that, or the other kind of E-motor, battery set-up, or projection of diesel-engine/generator size.

For me personally, the most relevant projection of possible TerraLiner diesel-engine/generator size has been egn's, because his projection is based on a real-world vehicle, his 9.5 m Blue Thunder 6x6 MAN-KAT. Blue Thunder weighs 42,300 lbs, or roughly 19 metric tons, and/or 21 American tons. In other words, Blue Thunder weighs roughly the same as the probably weight of the TerraLiner, once all the bells and whistles are loaded up. Yes, even with a titanium chassis, and carbon-fiber body......:( ...But the TerraLiner will be loaded with lots and lots of bells and whistles! :sombrero: ..And huge amounts of space.

So too, the conditions in which egn has driven Blue Thunder, so far, most nearly match the kinds of conditions that I would like the TerraLiner to be able to drive. egn seems mostly interested in "bad road" driving in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Australia. He seems much less interested in driving mud-tracks in Africa, or doing a great deal of crazy off-road driving. So egn's calculations for a TerraLiner serial hybrid drivetrain seem by far the most relevant to date.
