Awesome jeep! Forget all the fun, expo stuff for a moment. Once you finnish the repairs go camping. Borrow a tent, fill the cooler and just take a day or two to shake down the rig. You'll have fun and probably find some stuff that you want to fix.

I really like this thread alot. Good find and keep trucking on the build. Since you are on the cheap, and you said you have a plan for the wood grain then you may want to consider Krylon Fusion. I'm not sure how all the paint is but a guy at work painted his samurai for about 35 bucks. It looks great, he just took his time and sanded a bit. The paint may be fine but its always an option. Something that I saw once that looked amazing was those factory wheels you have painted white. With all the spokes it looked really good. It was on a maroon FSJ as well. Keep up the good work.

This one is for me. It's just gonna be my daily driver/weekend warrior. My plan is to just have fun on the cheap with it. I am helping a friend who is a missionary in Africa build up his Landcruiser and that's been fun as well.

I have a majore soft spot for the GW's and always see these great deals on them. Nice to see a first hand account of what it takes to get them back tippy top. Keep it up!

On the bright side... rebuilding a TF727 should yield at least another 20 years of usage. If you have it apart think about those upgrades... if the interest is there do the work yourself to pay for the parts. $0.02
TF transmissions are an easy rebuild, a master overhaul kit is usually around $175, a rebuilt convertor about $75, and pick up quite possibly one of the best transmission specific rebuild manuals here http://www.txchange.com/atsg.htm for about $20 and give it a shot if you are inclined to take it on. You will need access to a parts solvent tank, a small press (arbor, hydraulic-even the bottle jack style), and a couple of seal installation tools (I've gotten away with feeler gauges and a gentle hand for years). I love the build, happy trails.
