I was gonna say drop them off at my place but i saw the list and the first 3 wont even fit into my garage haha

I would like to see those things if that list is real, JBFP says its real but he likes to get a good joke in every now and then.

Titan...when will they learn? What's up with this "won't accelerate past 25" stuff? Why? Any details? Symptoms?

So many questions.

Basically getting to 25mph is a challenge. Foot down all the way, revving slower than dog crap, and it peters out at about 25. It will continue to speed up after a while of driving but not a whole lot. When the transmission does shift, it does so without issue. The 3.0 has 189xxx miles on it and ive only seen about 7-8k miles so I cant blame it, not knowing the past. If nothing else this is a great excuse to go get the 3.5 in the junkyard on Sunday.

AmphiGeek up there talks a good game, but he drinks all the wrong beer for all the wrong reasons and he doesn't ever want to wheel with us anymore, either. I remember when he was a cool guy with his Zen all chi-ed up and stuff.

Just kidding. IncX, we should go over to his house sometime. He lives over in south Scottsdale. If he's not home we can just let ourselves in. I kid!

Not sure where he keeps all those Unicorn vehicles, though. I seem to recall his aluminum thing, at least, is somewhere else.

Oh, by the way, Matt Castleberry, the guy that seems to think all things Astro van are just great, just bought a guy's '98 Montero that was being advertised through Facebook's Montero page. Matt was texting me yesterday all sad about how he couldn't find a decent Gen 2.5 or anything so I told him to look on the FB page and he immediately snapped up the one being sold by Perry Way on there. CA vehicle he just dropped about $5K in maintenance on, couple of really minor issues, fully loaded, $3500. We'll have HoseB polish it up and maybe I can try my hand at actually posting a picture.

Prescott, the last time I had a car that had a similar symptom, I was having fuel starvation problems. Your dad now owns it.

Mine was from a dirty tank that was clogging the filters. It would idle, as well as rev at idle fine, but under load no dice. I have a fuel pressure tester if you'd like to borrow it. At least that would rule it out. Start simple.

I have receipts for basically the entire fuel system getting re done before the PO sold it. I think they did it to try and pass emissions as it smelled like it was running rich. A massive exhaust leak definitely didnt help

We have one of those here at the cluster o' Monteros on 14th. Sure, it'll take you to Circle K just down the street, and it'll make it around on surface streets, but whoa Nelly, it falls on its face out on the SR 51 (the SuperSlab as we call it) when the fuel demand is high. It's going to need further cleaning of the tank and the pick up screen.

If I was Prescott, I might have a look under the hood while it's running at night, crazy as that sounds, since that's a great time to see if there's a voltage leak past the spark plug wires or somewhere with the secondary electric, like the cap, coil, wires, etc. Running hard in the ol' desert could've dislodged something causing a short. Likewise, it could have knocked something loose in the fuel tank that's just now starting to clog things up. There's definitely something basic wrong, and I'll wager it's not something terribly complicated, provided it can be found.

It ran well before this Table Mesa trip, right?

Well enough. It was still a 3.0 so still slow as crap but it always sounds like it was only firing 4 cylinders. Im tempted to take it apart this weekend. I bought basically everything Rockauto had to redo the motor so I have parts available. Tear it apart over the weekend, go through everything, inspect and maybe find some things that need fixing. If I didnt do the 3.5 maybe I could just supercharge the 3.0. With as little options as these vehicles have for aftermarket support, there sure does seem like a lot of things you can do for swaps.

Personal Top 4:

4M40T/4D56 (best, just hard to find without sacrificing your first child)
Supercharged 3.0L (Good, I just worry about all the dirt and mud finding its way into the motor and overall longevity)
3.5L (Good, but I will always want more lol)
4.3L (ok,isnt documented well enough in my opinion to try in my daily driver. Looking for about 1-2 wks down time)

Diesel swaps won't gain you power, the idea of them is cool and you'll get a bit more fuel efficiency, but still a project. You could turbo the 3.0 pretty easy I beleive, I'm not totally sure about super charging. 3.5 swap is cool, but still a lot of work to do, any engine swap would require you to go and buy a daily driver or something that can get you by for at least a month or so. There is always those few things that come up while doing a swap that might hang you up for a couple days, a week, maybe longer. That's with any swap though.

My opinion, the 3.0 isn't a power house, but still decent and for the most part easy to work on. Still faaaaar better than a 2.6. Do some maintenance to it, clean it up and build that truck up and lets 4 wheel. All montero guys are slow anyway.

you likely have a dead coil. it happens and the symptoms are exactly as you explained.

it's running rich because two of the 6 cylinders are not firing. its only getting to 25 because it's making 2/3 the power it should be (actually less) pull plug wires off the coils until you figure out which one it is, if you pull the wire and nothing changes in the idle, thats the ticket. then swap that coil with one of the working ones to make sure the problem stays with the coil, if it stays with the coil replace it, if it moves, replace the ignition module, both are extremely cheap and easy to swap and can be got at the junkyard for pocket change.

by all mean, swap to a 3.5, but get your system working correctly or you'll do a butt load of work just to be annoyed at the results. ;)

They are real….. real big, real expensive & really need more love than one man's time & budget can handle these days but I tread forward! You are more than welcome to check them out… the 2 small buggies are up on the trailer covered these days… but everything else is accessible

He's got a 12v, so only one coil.

ah, well ignore my diagnosis then. Sounds exactly like dropping a coil on the 24 valve. definitely check those wires and the distributor cap. Have you done a compression test? The 12 valves are non interference but people still burn a valve here and there, burnt valve means no compression. Am I coming late to the convo or is there a thread on this truck?

Nice! thanks for the invite. They're actually amphibious or you just dunk them without care? haha

That was a damn nice truck for sale. I was shocked when he posted the price.
