Couldn't the Rally get you a Turkmenistan transit visa? (no minder required)

The MCR got us one.

At least a tourist visa gives you more flexible entry/exit dates.

I think it will be fun to have a local along. Fitting him in the back of the Jimny though, that is another issue ;)

A great reason to take along a 'lightweight' like me :sombrero:

The payload is 760lbs. and it seats 4.

snip......

Just Charlie and I are 500 lbs. Add 120 lbs. in fuel and water, 80 lbs. of skid plates, tools- well, you get the picture.

........

That's exactly why we went with tourist visas. Higher costs, but if we had an incident occur there wouldn't be a mad scramble to leave the country or extend the visa.

Turkmenistan requires all foreigners to have a tour guide at all times. Technically he's not a government employee and not a minder, but I'm sure he will be keeping an eye on us. Paul Theroux has a great story about the government in "Ghost Train to the Eastern Star"

Well, I've got about 45 minutes until Scott picks me up and we meet up with everyone.

Last night was pretty mellow. Only a few teams showed up the launch point and I was there from about 6:45 to 10. There are 44 teams launching from Barcelona. Only four American teams are launching here. I met two of the others. There's also a team from Canada. We were told by Adventurists staff that most of the Spanish teams would not be arriving until this morning.

Several of us headed off to a local tavern for some food and drinks. A few more Spanish teams showed up but it was a pretty relaxed affair.
