Its got low range...Why not!

It shares a lot of drive line parts with the IFS toy trucks.

They have quite a following.

The bummer is the Unit body makes any sort of lift to clear any decent size tire a real chore.

A good chunk of the t.v.p.com folks are local to me... I've actually had the chance to get out on the trails with them a time or two. Pretty cool really. You can get "camper" versions with stoves & fridges and guys have already lifted & locked them

Home made campers or factory?

There is a 91 Previa AWD for sale near me that suposidly runs and drives but needs a water pump and cosmetic repairs with 200k. $500 asking price. After reading this last night I really got to thinking How fun it would be to pound on that and and that price...Hell why not. I don't thinkthe Previa had low range like the Van Wagons but I bet a it wouldn't be hard to get a case in it. Do somethign hokey like a hatch in the floor to get at the case shifter.

The Previa you sit aft the front wheels so it may be a lot easier to get some lift on it and some Sawzal clearencing and get some skinny 31's. It already comes with a bigger tires anyway.

Ohh hell the wife would KILL me if I borught it home. I'd be living in it. I want it just to see folks freak at it bouncing down trail 4 at Tellico LOL.

I've always thought the 4WD Toyota van was pretty cool in a Syncro sort of way. Here's a Mitsubishi, so anything's possible I guess.

Over in Kuwait we had a neat little van called the Mitsubishi Space Gear 2400. It had a 2.4l i-4 engine (gasoline), and 4wd running gear with a 2-speed transfer case. Seemed like it had very similar running gear and controls to my 1990 Montero. Also had a 5-speed tranny which made it fun to drive. I took it "off roading" in deep sand around our camp (Truckville) several times, never did get it stuck. The AC wasn't that good, but then again you had this little engine trying to cool a huge cabin in 120+ temperatures, so maybe that wasn't unexpected...

I'll post pictures when I get home.

UPDATE: Pictures posted.

I've often wished we could get something like this in the US. Not a hard-core off-roader, I think the high CG, limited approach angle and poor breakover angle would keep it off anything but well-maintained FS roads, but it could be the perfect expedition machine for North America, at least. I don't recall the MPG, though. We got our fuel basically for free from the grateful Kuwaitis, so we never had any incentive to conserve. So, for example, if we were driving up to Camp Doha (1 hour away) or Camp Buehring (2 1/2 hours), we'd park the thing with the engine running and the AC blasting for 15-20 minutes so it would "cool down" before we drove.
